I was born in Guyana in South America, came to America when I was 12. I remember my uncle had the cops called on him in Virginia when he came from college to visit my aunt's house and she wasn't at home when he arrived. A neighbor saw him hanging around and called the cops thinking he was some perp. Some of those folks still seem to think the Confederacy exists. They lost the war, get over it, smh. I was even pulled over on a few occasions in routine traffic stops by state troopers when I was coming down from Plattsburgh to New York City, in places like Glens Falls, Saratoga Springs, you can be profiled like no tomorrow. Me personally I don't get worked up about race, I know my inner qualities and steadfastness in going after what interests me, so I don't sweat those things to the detriment of my civility. I love the cultures of others, always have been that way. I can sit and watch a documentary on Russia, China, India, Japan, Brazil, etc. Those kind of things fascinate me. I'm always open to other people and their way of life, never being ignorant and limiting myself.
Thx bro, I did an entire thesis on Portuguese colonization of Brazil for my history degree. I love studying Brazilian cultural history.
there you go... that's my background Portuguese/Brazilian. is kind of common to see people talking about brazil but not that much about portugal. Portugal have a bealtifull story too, and is a nice place to travel Also!
Hey! Sorry to hear that; you've been feeling bad for a long time. I know that cold was kicking your butt. I hope you're feeling well now. I'm glad you're back! I've been feeling a little rough these days, but I'm surviving.
It started out as a cold, then went into the flu and then seemed like a cold and flu together. That shit kicked my ass and then some...lol I'm still not back to myself yet, but thank God I can function better again. I'm sorry you're going through a rough patch. If you need to talk, you know where to find me.
And this is why you're awesome. I am the same way- the way other people live has always intrigued me. I think you and I could have some really interesting conversations. IB!! Glad to see you're back and you're on the mend!
:smt023 Absolutely, as a kid I used to read the newspaper and memorize the capital of countries, little things like that from a young age. Different languages, cultures, customs simply interests me. Sometimes I feel like I should be hosting my own show on the Travel Channel or National Geographic.
I can see it now! "Traveling the world with GQ" Put that with the fact there's one attractive host and you'd own the travel channel in a matter of days. And I can say 'I knew him when!' My parents used to get me National Geographic when I was a kid. I'd pretty much wait at the mailbox for that to come, too. I loved it. I'd read them from cover to cover..so I definitely understand your fascination. Do you have any particular cultures that interest you more than others?
I like that travel the world with GQ, move over Samantha Ryan, Andrew Zimmern and Anthony Bourdain, here I come. LOL, @ waiting at the mailbox. I don't really have a particular favorite that sticks out above others. I do like Brazilian history a lot, also I love to read the Icelandic sagas. I find something intriguing about Iceland with its homogeneous culture and beautiful landscape tucked away in the North Atlantic.
Darn right! GQ is takin' over! Really? Iceland? Interesting. I don't know too much about them, to be honest. Brazil I know a bit about, though. South America in general has always been very interesting to me. Always wanted to go to carnival- you in?
LOL, I'm from a carnival culture in the West Indies. They usually have a parade in Toronto and down here in New York City, also in Trinidad and Tobago. We Caribbean culture folks love our carnivals. The Rio carnival has become so commercialized and watered down from its glory days. Any bloke off the street can pay some money and become part of the parade with one of the samba schools. The whole thing is now a money making venture first and foremost. I always wanted to visit Brazil, Guyana is right next to Brazil on the Atlantic coast of South America.
I think you have stalker syndrome because i have checked every thread where GQ is and boy are you stalking and you have the temerity to write what you wrote about me? Thats rich!!
Errr, ah Appiah me and her have been bantering back and forth intensely for a while now with one another. Guess I'm a stalker as well by that account then, I respond, she responds, she responds, I respond and the cycle goes on. As you can see I'm just as much a part of those threads in the discussions with her. Sounds like you are upset about something she wrote to you earlier and using this out of context. I rather enjoy conversing with her in the various threads, if I didn't I would not and I'm sure the same is true for her.
LOL! Appiah, you're being silly. I think you took what DB said entirely too personally. It sounded more like she was trying to help you to me; not insult you....I don't think you realize how you were coming across in reference to your "thirstiness". Lighten up & have a sense of humor...there's no crazy stalker activity going on between DB & GQ, so leave 'em alone.
