Transformers and GI Joe comics have left IDW Publishing

IDW Publishing's long-standing license to publish comic books based on the Hasbro toy line franchises G.I. Joe and Transformers seems to have ended, with longtime IDW editor David Mariotte tweeting a farewell to the Transformers franchise on his personal Twitter account on the occasion of the publication of the last IDW Transformers issue.

IDW published Transformers comics starting in 2005, and G.I. Joe comics starting in 2008. The original announcement of the change came through The Hollywood Reporter(opens in new tab), who reported in December 2021 that Robert Kirkman's Skybound imprint of Image Comics was in talks to pick up the license.

"At the end of 2022, IDW will bid a fond farewell to the publication of G.I. Joe and Transformers comic books and graphic novels. We’re exceedingly proud of our stewardship of these titles — 17 years with the Robots in Disguise and 14 years with A Real American Hero — and thank the legion of fans for their unwavering support, month in and month out," read a statement from IDW provided to THR at the time of the initial announcement. "We're also eternally grateful to every one of the talented creators who helped bring these characters to four-color life through our comics."

IDW published one final major G.I. Joe story for 2022 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the revamped GI Joe: A Real American Hero toy line, which revised the original GI Joe soldier toy into the concept of a fighting force made up of unique and distinct characters, with equally colorful enemies to match.

No announcement has been made regarding where the publishing licenses for G.I. Joe and Transformers will wind up following IDW's deal ending and Skybound never commented on THR's December 2021 report. IDW will apparently retain the license to publish comics based on other Hasbro properties including MASK, Visionaries, ROM, and more.

In addition, IDW has been publishing more Star Trek and Dungeons and Dragons licensed comics in recent months.

Henry Cavill’s Rumored Next Project Is Warhammer 40,000

Now that he’s hung up his Superman cape, Henry Cavill is diving into another adaptation: He is set to headline an Amazon series based on Warhammer 40,000, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The series — which is still in early development, with no writers attached yet — springs from the popular board game, set 40,000 years in the future where humans are locked in a never-ending war with aliens and magical beings. Cavill is a Warhammer fan and even paints the game’s miniature figures himself. Amazon is in final talks to lock down the rights to the game after a lengthy bidding war.

I hope its a Hard Reboot. DC needs a clean slate going forward. Hopefully Gunn knows he has to kill his babies going to look real bad if he saves his projects like Suicide Squad and Peacemaker while nuking everything else. I hope that Jason Momoa as Loba is true.

I wonder how they handle Reeves Batman? He is been pretty territorial but I dont think The Batman performance was good enough for such deference at least BO Wise.

Social Media wise he has mentioned LOBO, BAT-MITE, MR. TERRIFIC...then NIGHTWING, GREEN ARROW, STATIC (SHOCK), ZATANNA, & BOOSTER GOLD were all a poll he did. I like to see all of those besides BAT-MITE and BOOSTER.

Nightwing is interesting cause it suggest if they don't integrate Reeves Batman...that we might finally get a Batman with Sidekicks.

I do think the MCU is showing weakness and DC has a chance to launch with a higher class of Black Male Characters then Marvel Did especially with BP Dead. John Stewart, Green Lantern, Static and Mr. Terrific now that is a strong Black Male Core.

Hmm....The issue with adapting Tabletop RPGs is that the backstories are often bloated and convoluted. It makes the film either a watered-down version of the source material or a dense unfollowable mess of a story. If Henry Cavill was going to adapt a game I kind of wish the rumor of him staring in a Mass Effect game was true.

Depends on what they do...Warhammer also needs an insane Budget.

Simplest show is probably to have Henry play an Inquisitor investigating a particular planet.
