    Heritage is important because it connects you to a group of people with similar traits, features or ancestry. As social animals, humans need to feel connected to others, it gives us a sense of belonging. Heritage is important for the same reason that family is important, for the same reason that people wave flags or classify themselves as 'liberals', 'conservatives', 'introverts' etc. We're pack animals and we bond with those we regard as similar.

    I may feel a special bond with African people but being African isn't morally relevant, pan-Africanism is just a social idealogy. The happiness and suffering of non-Africans is equally as valuable and dis-valuable as the happiness and suffering of Africans.
