It's too flash! Melanie Slade turns down $280,000 Ferrari birthday gift from Footballer Theo Walcott

She's always been rather shy of the limelight and has never fully embraced the lavish lifestyle.

So it's little wonder that Melanie Slade has turned down an expensive birthday present from Arsenal player boyfriend Theo Walcott for being too flash.

Student Melanie, who turns 21 this month, was surprised with a $280,000 Ferrari California with personalized plates from Walcott, 20, for her upcoming birthday.

But she told him she didn't want it and was more than happy with her $40,000 white VW Beetle that he bought her for her 18th birthday.

Melanie, who is studying physiotherapy at St George's Hospital in London, thought the Ferrari was 'vulgar' and too flashy to be driving round her campus.

And she told her friends that she wished that Walcott, who earns $120,000 a week at the Premiership club, was less showy with his money.

A friend said: 'Melanie turned her nose up and said she couldn't believe he spent so much on it. She thought it was a waste of money.

'She has driven it but is back to driving her Beetle. Mel doesn't want the flash lifestyle. She was embarrassed her univeristy mates knew she had a car worth so much when some students struggle to have enough money to eat.'

Melanie and Theo have been dating since they met at the WestQuay shopping centre in Southampton in 2006, and she was thrust into the media spotlight when she accompanied him to the World Cup in Germany.

But despite having many opportunities open up for her since, such as becoming the face of outdoor clothing specialist Helly Hansen, she is still determined to qualify for her degree and work as a physiotherapist.

And she also admits she is not one to totter around in designer clothes and stiletto heels and much prefers her tracksuits.

She said: 'I'm always in comfortable stuff really. Especially being at uni, my style is very relaxed, I love my jeans and a baggy sweatshirt.'

There is one you don't hear every day, when it comes to the lifestyles of the rich. :)

Speaks to a level of maturity in her to not be defined by high maintenance behavior.

Good for her. She won't let all that go to her head and she stays on par with the rest of us "little people"
 
I hate to be cynical but a lot about this is bothering me:


Shame on him. Maybe to him $280,000 is like buying a $2800 used car would be for almost everyone else, but still. It looks like he is trying to buy love. Not good to do at any age, let alone at the beginning of his twenties.

How did this get to the press? If she is so shy and quiet why didn't she just turn it down quietly and not tell her friends or anybody and just move on?

Good point...I re-read it and it doesn't say why this went to press. I can only surmise that a 21st Birthday is a big event for anyone, and since her B/F is so high-profile, the media were naturally inquisitive of what he bought her.

Unreal. All that money and this is all he can think of to do with it? Oh well, it is his money, so more power to him. C'est la vie!

One thing that totally stood out to me about this whole thing is of course she's from the UK. This isn't something you'd likely hear about in the US. I'll give you two guesses why.
 
This story is WAY old. Always thought he could do better. He is an attractive man. She is very generic looking; by English standards; I don't know what it's like in the States.

This. Who put the story out there?



She was just a shop girl when she met him. I am sure, if the story is true......turning down the car at this point won't haunt her. She'll have plenty of expensive cars from him later.

Lol I've been to England as recently as 2007 and she's hot by English standards too in my opinion. There are some hot women there but it ain't Denmark or Iceland.

Any died and we had to take the body to Jamaica to be buried. She was a professor in Lancaster.
She's attractive by what I've seen in the UK. Not saying you guys don't have hot girls but they aren't all hot. Just like here in the US some are.
