Thank you Andrae. That's EXACTLY it.

Yes, agreed, there are WAY MORE IMPORTANT things to be arguing/debating about. You seem to have made it your personal agenda to make anyone who is opposed to this as anti-Muslim. That's NOT the case, and I thank you for not making me appear like I am anti-Muslim.

As I've stated, I don't agree with them doing it. I won't ever say they can't. But I don't agree with it. The last time I checked, I am an American citizen and have a right to agree or disagree with things going on in my country. That doesn't make me a bigot. That doesn't make me anti-Muslim. I'm exercising my right to disagree with the decision.

Let's just agree to disagree.
lol :smt011

What amendment protects the right again? Here is the thing. They have the right from the same amendment that you have a right to disagree or agree. People do show their lack of tolerance towards religions when they disagree with this case. They have a right to do it and that is all. They have no connection shown other then their religion to the terrorist of 9/11. It is not fair to say well you can build a Christian or Jewish building and not a muslim one.

Am I speaking a foreign language? I mean, really. 2 posters that I respect are putting words in my mouth.

Let me put it plainly:

If I were a politician in the city/state of NY, I would NOT deny them their right to build the community center/mosque. But it is in my right to not LIKE that decision.

I'm out of here. I'm tired of people calling me a bigot and putting words in my mouth.

I'm right now in a "I want to tell everyone to f**k off" mood.

wow, step back and relax bookie.

:)

Not ONCE did I ever say that they shouldn't be allowed their rights. I don't agree with what they're doing, but I have never said they shouldn't. I think it's in poor taste, but like I've said, it's their Constitutional rights to do it.

Seriously, stop getting your knickers knotted. You're making a mountain out of a molehill.

WHY? These people don't live and work in that neighborhood? There weren't Muslims who died in the WTC like everyone else? There's a four block perimeter around Ground Zero which demarcates the difference between the non-reaction to the extant mosque that's been in that neighborhood for almost half a century and the outrage burning with the fire of a thousand suns directed at this new community center?

Seriously, what THE FUCK is the problem if you don't blame all Muslims for the attacks and don't think that they don't count the same as every other American? If you do, I understand why you think that it's inappropriate. I don't agree, but I understand. And yeah, you're entitled to that opinion. I certainly don't have the right to say that anyone can't think what they want to. The reason I keep harping on this issue is because I seriously don't understand how anyone can claim with a straight face that the supposed offense being committed against the memory of the 9/11 victims with the construction of this building isn't based on the notion that is Islam itself is responsible for the terrorist attacks or that people who believe that the entire religion is to blame should be appeased with the blockage of its construction.

Yeah yeah. Discriminatin ass muthaphukkas...lol

It's not THAT serious... :smt078

If people don't want to answer common sense questions that's fine.

What people like myself and Book keeo trying to illustrate is that we don't have a problem with Mosques or even people who practice there but why put it there if its going to cause a problem for so many. Manhattan is fucking huge and there are plenty of other places to build Mosques why buld one where it well get the most negative attention. It makes it seems as if those who are building this Mosque are looking to start problems.

I understand this point but why is it that they get this criticism of why build it when it will give so many problems. If it was a Christian church or any other building, would you have said this point? It is an unfair point. There have been times in this country's history where people exercising their rights would cause trouble to both them and the other side. One example is of the little rock nine. One could easily say why send children to a majority white school when it will cause so many problems for so many. Arkansas is huge and there are plenty of black schools that those black children could go to. Why send them to Little Rock Central High School where it will get much negative attention? It makes it seem like the kids going to that school are starting problems.

Someone back in that time could have made that argument to the little rock nine. It isn't a valid argument to say you are going to bring trouble for yourself or others if you exercise your right. It will only make people feel like they shouldn't exercise their rights to make people feel comfortable. I say get them uncomfortable.

Final note: I was not accusing Bookworm of bigotry. I just didn't agree with the idea of not exercising your right just because it will cause problems for you or the other side which is from that quote that bookworm quoted.

I'm sure I'll be ok. It's not like I'm getting my palm read or getting my future read by a fortune teller.

It's just a message board talking to a bunch of people I don't know about a topic that doesn't mean much to me. Lol*

I think it's pretty damn nasty how Old Books has been jumped on here, I think sometimes people on here take too much of an analytical view of things and don't regard peoples feelings/emotion in situations such as this.

Yes I think people should be able to build where they want to, I don't disagree at all with that, but can you stop people FEELING that they shouldn't build there, no, people are people and they hold grudges that's the nature of people, if I had lost someone close to me, I would feel the personal indecency of what it symbolises.
Maybe If I had lost relatives or friends in 7/7 I'd have a more negative view, my Dad and Brother were working in London that day, parking in E London and using the Tube to get into central but luckily enough they had made there journey over an hour previous, but it still didn't stop me being concerned, I was at home that day and soon as the TV broke the news I was on the phone trying to contact them, which actually ended up taking hours because the Mobiles were blocked probably because everyone else was doing the same thing.
If thing's had been different, damn right I'd feel negative because forgive and forget is what happens in the playground not when you steal a friend/family members life, yes it's unfair!
but if you get bitten by the same breed of Dog twice, your not so keen to approach a third time.

Call me a Bigot I don't care I'm not of an Altruistic nature, so whatever.

I agree with you and Andrae 100,000,000%. Some folks don't get it.

Right. You're not a bigot. You just think that bigots who are having an irrational knee jerk response to the substanceless attacks on this building and everyone involved with its construction should be appeased by denying these people their rights. The media truly frightens me. I guarantee you that if they hadn't hyped this non-story, most people wouldn't have known or cared about "The Ground Zero Mosque" just like they don't know or care about the mosque that already exists in close proximity to the spot where the WTC used to be.

So yeah, agree to disagree.

I agree that if this hadn't been so well publicized in the media, most likely people wouldn't have had such a negative reaction to it, but that's kinda obvious... it's difficult to dispute something you are unaware of.

However, calling Bookie a bigot is simply not appropriate. At no point did she express such sentiment Raocha. Saying you can understand why some people would be upset though you don't necessarily agree with them, is not bigotry, it's empathy.

I personally have no issue with a mosque being built anywhere, Muslims weren't responsible for 9/11, idiots were and idiocy knows no religion, it's an equal opportunity state of mind. However, I can see how it would bother some people, and not being from NYC I don't feel like I should really voice a strong opinion either way. So looks like I'm joining Bookie in the bigot camp... so be it, at least I'll be in good company with her and Drae.

Cosign. Even Iggy makes sense.

I agree on the basis that it would be unconstitutional to deny them the mosque. I also agree that it's a pretty tasteless idea for the Muslims to put one there, given city sentiment regarding the 9/11 terrorist attacks which were fueled by Islamic terrorists. That's like the old-age concept of adding insult to injury. Sure, what you are about to do is legal, but at the same time it's not going to garner you much respect, like running up the score in a football game you've already won.

I completly agree with you.

this is going to test racial and religious tolerances definitely. the people wanting the mosque there may have had nothing to do with 9/11, or anything anti-american at all. They're just suffering backlash the way Japanese-Americans did when their native Japan bombed pearl Harbor in '41. It's like you knew every Japanese person wasn't anti-American, but still couldn't take the chance that some were, so you demonized them all just to play it safe.

Damned if you do, and damned if you don't
for sure.

it makes him look bad either side of the street he stands on, with this matter. This reminds me of the Dr Gates issue. Instead of just leaving it to local authorities, he chimes in his 2 cents.

He put himself into a trap, with situation that has ramifications either way, why weigh in on an issue like that, especially when you do have bigger fish to fry as Unchosen would say...he needs to look out for himself, and that mean staying out the line of fire for mid-terms.

Yes this country was founded first and foremost on the freedom of speech and religion. And they do have the right to build their Mosque anywhere in America, but c'mon do they have to build it next to 9/11 area?? Even some Moderate muslims, such as Rachel Raza, etc... disagree with idea of building a mosque in that vicinity.
Again Obama should have stayed out of it. He is got a bigger fish to fry than getting involved where a mosque should be built. I am sure after this a full pledged neo-nazi will fully expect to have an endorsement from Obama when he decides to erect a memorial to Hitler next to a synagogue or a giant statue of the Grand Wizard in Harlem. SMDH.

I know it is a bad analogy that I used, but still BO should have stayed out of STATE Matter!

I agree to certain extent...nnow you open the door for fools and idiots.

I jus peeped these, that would be funny to see.
Absolutely deplorable idea.

Yes, technically they have the "right" to build a mosque there (or a Muslim cultural center as they are calling it:roll:) but if they had ANY commonsense and decency they wouldnt do this.

Honestly, how out of touch do you have to be to understand that this is insanely tasteless.
A lot of these Muslims just dont get it. They have a LOT of nerve to be doing this imo.

And where is the money coming from?? 100 million dollars just doesnt pop out of the sky. I would hope the feds will investigate the paper trail.

There is an online petition going around demanding a gay bar to be put right next to the mosque. How funny would that be? lol
I'd like to see how "tolerant" those idiot muslims would be then
.

Not brown nosing you, truly good points sir.

None of y'all jive turkeys responded to me the 1st time, so I'm gonna ask my original questions again, you bastards...lol

This is what Obama said about the mosque issue:

"As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country," Obama said to applause at an event attended by diplomats from Islamic countries and members of the U.S. Muslim community.

"That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances..."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38699741/ns/politics

Where in that quote did he say he was in favor of the mosque? Am I reading this wrong?

My next point is the mayor of New York (Michael *Bloomberg,) many religious organizations IN NYC and the agency that came up with the idea live in the city.

If people are going to get upset, they should talk to the people of NYC who approved this idea, not Obama.

But it seems that everybody is mad at Obama as if he not only originated the idea, but he spearheaded the campaign to make this a reality.

Is anybody mad at Mayor Bloomberg, or they're just focused on Obama?

If obama came out & said he wasn't a fan of the idea would they scrap the idea? I don't think so because he wasn't part of the plan to create it in the first place...

And lastly, was Obama asked his opinion on the mosque? I don't have any proof, but I'm pretty sure a reporter (or 2) asked him his opinion about it because he is the President of the U.S...

Do we really think he wasn't asked to comment on this?

And if they DID ask him, what was he gonna do, say "no comment?"

How many people would be up in arms if he said THAT? Probably the same people who are mad at him now...

a gay bar, a military-themed club (chock full of boasting servicemen), or a hooters, complete with women bits bursting at the seams..

FTW

yeah really .... stop trying to be the community activists and start politicing-up or better yet when an issue like that skip gates and the mosque issues come up do a james brown and dance around the bitch.

stop putting on your damn cape being a captian save a ho

I dont know whether to laugh or respond to this. Good one my friend, good one. You gave me a good laugh after a long hard day, thanx.

no problem.

Look Obama is no longer U of C law school Constitutional professor, he is a poltician know. He has to get with American ppl to get things done. Getting mixed up with Mosque stuff is ridiculous. What is next? He is gonna have a beer summit with 9/11 family? He is got a job to do:

1.Unemployment
2.Border control
3.Education
4.Healthcare
5.Economy
5.Two wars

Enough with getting mix up with minor stuff. The honey moon is over. I am getting disappointed with this guy. I voted for him, donated money to his campaign and campaigned for the guy, get it together BO.

Excellent points all around man. Obama is in over his head and it doesnt help that he has surrounded himself with dipshits either.
