There are all sorts of clinical mental disorders that require psychiatric treatment. Saying someone is not in touch with reality is such a broad and nonspecific statement, and an unfair one.
THere was a time when my uncle was on the street homeless. WHen he got stabilized after a 6 month stay at a psych hospital to get the correct levels for his meds, he was ALWAYS the first person who knew when his meds were slightly off and his dosage had to adjusted.
THe biggest problem that I've seen most people battling MI have to deal with isn't coping with other people, it's learning to live with THEMSELVES and their illness.
Just saying, making a statement that,'the MI are not usually in touch with reality', really is only accurate for someone who's experiencing a profound psychotic break and only covers a very narrow type of condition.
OCD?? Mental Illness.
Clinical depression?? Mental illness.
Unresolved issues from your childhood that negatively impact your adult life and the personal and professional decisions you make?? Mental illness.
Mental illness doesn't just mean schizophrenia.
