Jill Scott winces at us BM/WW [Update]

I wish I could update the original title to include "Jill Scott Update" but I'm going to post this here instead of creating another thread for this nonsense. I do feel this needs to be addressed though because: 1. This is certainly in direct response to the Reggie Bush Cover 2. Black Men and White Women: Jill Scott on Why it Hurts is plastered all over newsstands in this country. Big up to the Essence readers who realize this is just another ploy at targeting insecure Black women. As far as Jill Scott is concerned, even though I don't like her music, I'm really disappointed at her (and come to find out she wrote a song about this to), being that I always found her smile and personality to be warm.

Hmmm, she had a deep explanation, but whatever. She needs to get over. Stop fucking wincing. I guess it won't hurt a black man dating a white woman if she winces, because the black man would probably not give a shit who she winces at.

I could cut that essay into pieces...but whatever. Essence messes up with its fans and BM/WW get slagged on the next issue to make amends. You would never see shit like this in a "White Woman's magazine" and have a celebrity do it nonetheless.

White Men and Asian Women: Faith Hill on Why it Hurts

Can you imagine seeing that shit and the backlash. A White female celebrity would lose her career over some shit like this, and let's not even get into if a White Male wrote this about BM/WW :smt039 bye bye career

I wonder how a Black male celebrity would fair if he said his soul winced at BW/WM.???

But a Black Female celebrity can say it and it's on Newsstands all over the country. :smt011

I'd love to hear what you have to say, as I'm sure many of the other board members would love to as well.

and you're right, that wouldn't happen, but if it did the response wouldn't be good or supportive from WW.

Damn that's annoying. I freaking LOVE Jill Scott's music. Very disappointing.

You know, I hate to say this, but when she talks about the betrayal and the empty bed I can't help but think... even if there were no White Women on the planet, she still couldn't have pulled an athlete, so she sounds crazy.

Agreed. I think that the thing that gets me is how she talks about the struggle that black men and black women went through during slavery. Even though that is all true, she wasn't one of the women encouraging those black men during slavery. Just like, it wasn't me that enslaved them. I could understand 'wincing' if you had been encouraging a black man during slavery and as soon as he was emancipated that he ran to a white woman. However, that is not the case for black women today. Does she 'wince' when she sees a black woman with a white man? White men beat and raped female slaves daily, but somehow that's not mentioned. It's interesting how it doesn't work both ways.

I have to spread some rep around before giving it to you again, apparently, but I wanted to say that I agree with every word of this post. Well said.

the new cover, with Zoe... isn't she involved with a Caucasian fellow? (which is her business of course, but I'm curious if the reactionary letters will follow her like they did with reggie bush).. ;)

    Highly doubtful.

    Nope.

And Zoe doesn't even identify as "Black" (she's DR/Latina and says as much) which makes her being on the cover even more curious.

Well if you fall into the black girl lockstep and stand by and let them be the "diva" then you've got no problems.

    Is Essence Magazine Folding?
    http://www.atlantapost.com/2010/03/is-essence-magazine-folding/

The iconic brand may be folding its magazine, according to Gawker, proving that even the popular go-to mag for black women can’t withstand the tides of the recession. Just a couple of days after announcing the retirement of beauty editor Mikki Taylor, Gawker reports that there have been a lot of pink slips and turnover since November. Talk of the magazine’s financial problems came up when they used an old picture of Reggie Bush as their cover shot for their February issue. If a large magazine owned by Time Inc. can’t afford to do a photo shoot for their cover story then who can? Time will tell if Essence goes the way of Vibe and become an online-only pub.

    Haven't you heard...?

IR is only wrong when BM are involved.

This magazine is so hypocritical on so many levels. I read Jill Scott's article and nearly flipped my wig. Sometimes I don't think people listen to the stuff that comes out of their mouths. If they were so hellbent on putting black men in check about interracial marriage then why do they celebrate women with mixed backgrouds? They will praise Alicia Keys in a minute but overlook the acting contributions of someone like Taye Diggs. It's crazy.
