Valid point, Ore. I thought however, NAFTA was more beneficial economically for Latin America..Don't we have many companies also who upped and moved shop to Mexico.

Fascinating. Makes me want to further look into it. In Australia, we really didn't learn much (if anything) of the political turmoil of Latin countries and the U.S, so it's engrossing information.

 

NAFTA was the biggest con pulled on the public until the Obama administration's TPP. It was supposed to benefit everyone, but really benefitted corporations. In each country's case, the workers of each country suffered and the corporate bottom lines benefitted.

The US lost loads of manufacturing jobs, hastening the departure that had already begun and which would soon accelerate, this time to China. Now, even Mexico loses jobs to China, because 120 million poor workers pales in comparison to 1.5 billion poor workers under a rigid dictatorship/plutocracy without independent unions or the right to organize.

Mexico lost because the short-term benefit of manufacturing jobs from the US was soon lost to China, while their agricultural sector was decimated by US gov't-supported agribusiness. Agriculture was their rural employment scheme and it was destroyed, leading to the surge in migration to the States. So now they have a defunct, uncompetitive industrial sector and an uncompetitive, pre-industrial agricultural sector - the worst of both worlds.

Canada more or less held pace, from what little I've heard about its impact on our friends to the north.

The US has as much of an interventionist history in the Caribbean and Central/South America and West Africa as France and Britain do in the rest of the world. The Cuban, Colombian, Venezuelan and Haitian situations are literally played out on the streets of South Florida.

 

Ok, so what's the high priorities, since illegals is a low one?

That's self inflicted, I can manage myself far better than I can manage the criminal inclinations of others. Me managing my own health won't do much for me if we keep letting this drug war rule our lives that breed these gangs we're all so worried about.

 

When was the last time you ran into those gangs? Is this a daily, monthly occurrence?

Which one is killing more Americans? Heart is more than ten times the rate.
It is just unlikely that a gang member is going to kill you.


It is like the ebola. More people die from car accidents than the ebola but that was the big worry. There is a perspective when you look at stats but numbers are boring. People want to hate something that isn't them even though the stats are against them. Something they can see. The average american is more likely to die from eating poorly than being killed by gangs or illegal immigrants. yet this is what we worry about. Perspective!

I don't think most people in the nation deal with it. I'm certain I am part of the majority.

I think more people have to deal with heart disease or family members with heart disease over homicides by gangs or illegal immigrants. If that isn't an important issue with so many dying from it each year, why would that other issue be as important with far less Americans dying from it?

It is just perspective.

 

That's part of Trump's problem: make Mexico pay for it, how? Outside of the threat of military intervention, we can't "make" another country do anything. That's the kind of thing a person says when he has absolutely no idea how anything works and not knowing anything is what Trump does best.

Despite how big of a problem anyone thinks anyone thinks illegal immigration is, it's obvious that Trump has no actual idea ideas to fix it because he has no what he's talking about.

 

Yet another one of the things that we learn almost nothing about in history class. The American education system needs a massive, massive overhaul.

 

And yet Trump has presented no actual, workable, real world solutions to do anything about any of this. Seems pretty crazy to me. He has less than no idea what he's doing as a candidate. He's taking advantage of right-wing xenophobia and nothing else.

 

Haiti's role as the first black republic and the massive intellectual impact it had on the rest of the black world as the first and only successful slave rebellion cannot be underestimated. Nevertheless, the propaganda war against Haiti has been so effective that many black people treat Haitians as if they were undesirables or untouchables. There are contributing factors to the problem brought by poor and rural Haitian immigrants to be sure, it's not a one-way street, but the hostility toward them is palpable in Florida and only hinders our our understanding.

And props to Goodlove for sending this article. It was excellent, and I don't usually agree with the viewpoints expressed in Forbes, so that's saying something.

 

I find it "crazy" for govt. officials to release over 150,000 convicted criminals into our communities and the press not even address it. I'm also inclined to be more angry at said officials who release violent offenders, (and the press that covers for them) than the guy who exposes the bullshit. Whether he has perfect solutions or not.

 

More people are killed by heart disease than cops by far. When someone addresses police brutality we don't tell them to drop the subject and talk about heart disease instead since you're more likely to be killed by it.

 

Fair enough, I suppose. Still, someone running for President ought to have a platform that's more than the equivalent of fairy dust and unicorn farts.

 

It doesn't have to be. Not when it's demagoguery. Rile up the white working class, deflect blame for their real woes away from the corporate sector onto another group of the powerless, and there you have it: instant blind impotent rage.

 

You are exactly right. We do not. That's why we are at 610,000 dead americans. You are absolutely correct.

If you go back several years the numbers don't really change that much.
You can see with so many American lives on the line why the administration chose to champion the cause of healthcare over anything else.

Yet here we are talking about illegal immigration and other items that don't come close to killing so many Americans.
It just shows how much this administration understood the needs of the people despite being thrashed on it. and how petty we are as individuals to talk about low priority things in most Americans lives.

Heart disease is self-induced, something you can instantly control, and it only takes ONE PERSON to take control and prevent/rectify it from happening,..two if you get develop it and that's you and your doctor..... Crime, not so much.

Not so much also: Unemployment, high taxes, racism, programs being cut due to budgetary constraints, healthcare, healthcare systems overburdened, an overburdened broken justice system, revolving crime doors....things we can't control unless we instruct our politicians to get a handle on them, all things not untouched ALSO by a swelling illegal population sharing our resources, but barely contributing.

He may very well drop from the race. Time will tell.

BTW on the dem. side, every comment section i read seems to be full of Bernie Sanders supporters. He appears to be holding his own against Hillary.
