That's for four kids and truthfully I have never heard of 50k a month child support. That seems a little over the top. Even the best private schools on the east coast don't cost more than 50k a year so I don't get what the rest of the money is for unless its used for saving college tuition and possibly rent payments but even all that shouldn't cost over 200k year. I'm basing this on buying a condo on the upper eastside with condo fees.
It just doesn't sound like it should be 10 mill a year because then at a point its like compensating a woman for taking care of her own child. There's equal share and there's milking the system and getting 400k to raise your own kids is pathetic.

You wouldn't get that if you lived with both parents.
Even in the most wealthy areas people don't spend that kind of money on their kids even if they're making 100 times that.

To my knowledge, there isn't a cap, at least not in my state. It is simply a percentage of income. However it is calculated based upon how many nights the non-custodial parent has the child(ren). So for instance if the father has them 50% of the nights out of the year, and the mother has them 50% of the nights out of the year, they both have to pay each other child support. It is also a mandatory thing, and it's very difficult to get the court to agree to waive child support payments, even when the party to receive tells the judge they don't want it. They consider the needs of the child first, and they feel both parents should be responsible for supporting the child. They made me jump through hoops to refuse child support from my Ex, but most of the time the custodial parent is getting it regardless of whether they want it.

Most states think the child should live as the parent regardless of if they are in the same house. There usually isn't a cap that I am aware of.

Oh I get that but in a case where there is so much abundance I don't get why there isn't a cap. Even if you get the kid a nanny and all the extracirriculars his/her heart desires there's still so much left over. So does the spouse who has primary care just get to pocket the rest or does it get set up in a trust and if so why? If the parents were together and the parents didn't decide to set up any financial support beyond a college education they would be within their rights so I don't get how a your kids become entitled to your money even after all their needs are met.

That's insane to me. I get giving your kids privilege and a head start in life. I'm all for that but just handing over millions they didn't earn shouldn't be. If I were lucky enough to earn 100 million dollars it doesn't mean my kids are entitled to 17 million. That's never work in your life again money or just a horrible recipe for drugs and an early death

I can only speak for how it is here, and the money goes to the custodial parent and it's up to them to spend it as they see fit. I've known a couple instances where the parent spent it primarily on themselves, and the kids came second, which I think is disgusting. I think that in cases where there is an obvious abundance after the children's needs are met, that it should go into individual trusts for each child to do with as they see fit once they reach 18. That to me seems more fair as child support is for the children, and when there's an extreme excess, I think it essentially becomes alimony.

Sorry, it doesn't work like that. I do think there is room for improvement, but accounting for every penny isn't the way to go IMO. There are far too many assholes in the world who would haggle over something like that... did the child really need that item, couldn't you have gotten it at a better price, does it really cost that much to feed them... it would just open the door for too much bullshit IMO. Most single parents have enough going on, they don't need to endure the equivalent of an IRS audit every month.

I agree that some form of accounting would likely be wise, but I think that's just too much of a slippery slope, which is probably why it's never been put in place. It's a lovely thought that two adults could put aside their issues and function as good parents, however I find that is rarely the case. Some of the couples I witnessed in court during my divorce were just really disappointing. Divorce absolutely brings out the worst in some people, and can make a completely sane person completely nutters.

For most people that 17% doesn't even cover the rent or mortgage payment. So you could rest assured that you are paying the most basic of things, a home, and still not covering every single thing that kid is going to need. Ask a divorced parent you know....how much do you pay...........then go try to find an apartment for that amount. Prolly you can't do it.

I'm talking average people not Swizz and Pinault.
