Then you're not listening because people like Jayz Drake and Eminem spit a lot of positive uplifting stuff as well as commerically successful joints. No good rapper is one dimensional which is why the more positive rappers don't sell as much. Talking about the realities of life all the time either gets boring or depressing real quick.
the sad thing and the reality of the situation is that people are not buying music off the shelf anymore...it's all unauthorized copies...i can go to the gas station that is 3 blocks from my house...walk in and some bm will approach me back by the coolers and show me every cd and current movie for a fraction of the cost...if i have cash on me i might just be tempted to buy several cds...
huh? jay-z eminem kanye fiddy had his 15 seconds, and some of it was entertaining. but he by no means is or was the cruxt (sp?) of hip-hop. not sure why people still mention him. he is not relevant. his money came from business deals. his music career was short and over fast.

Yes I did. They were from the SAME ERA. Hammer had three albums do well. Both he and Will were kid and family-friendly rappers from the same era. In their prime, both sold mega-records. Hammer may have even sold more. Hammer had a cartoon, Will had a sitcom. What are you not getting? And Drake calling somebody a clown, am I supposed to lose sleep over that. He'll be gone by next year. Let me get this straight: you reference Will, whose last album was in 2005 (according to discogs.com), yet I'm out of date for referencing Fiddy, whose last album was in 2009. Gotcha.
hmm... will smith's rap career started in the 80s and he made albums through the new millenium. hammer had a big album in late 80s-1990 and a semi-seller follow up. and some how you are marking them as being the same era. makes no sense to me, but do your thing playboy. maybe someone who doesn't know rap will buy that.
hammer sold more than will? do some research. hammer isnt touchin anybody at this point. his album did well in the climate back then, but no dice johnny... he did not out-do the prince.

Before I Self Destruct has sold over 436,000 copies in the United States. As of January 21, 2010 the album has been certified Gold by the RIAA for shipment of more than 500,000 units. i can't find stats on the positive dudes, but i will say... gold isn't fantastic sales. and the positive dudes may very well be doing worse. but nobody is crushing the game (in the convo) at that point. lol
None of the guys you mentioned had anywhere near the media frenzy 50 had. He was for a lack of better term the most commercially successful gangsta rapper. That whole he got shot nine times thing made him huge. No one cared about Em's gun charges or Jay's stabbing charge because no one buys them as tough guys but in our thugged obsessed culture 50 was the first marketable and believable thug persona since Tupac. As far as music is concerned I think he's gone as far as he can go but he's relevant in the way he brought back believable thug life to the mainstream. That died out for a while after the big and tupac murders.
I agree with everything you said here except for the Drake comment. That kid is the future. He's the first person I've seen with staying power since Kayne. Very versatile and raps about what's hot and is very deep.
Yeah because he makes way better music. I was just saying as far as media you'd be hard pressed to find any male performer who has had as much media hype as 50 cent. Media hype doesn't always equal astronomical sales. Check Brittney's last album. It was ok but not great yet everyone was watching to see her self destruct.
