The synopsis reads, "Captured. Chained. Forced to fight for survival. Red Sonja must battle her way through the blood-soaked pits of a tyrant’s empire and rally an army of outcasts to reclaim her freedom and take down Dragan and his ruthless bride, Dark Annisia."
Straight to streaming & DVD/Blu-Ray right?? Ain't no way they are releasing this SYFY Channel Original throwback in theatres....
I forgot to include that Red Sonja hits theaters on August 15, before arriving digitally on August 29.
Guess I'll be doing the same. So that's one of my two big weekend activities. The other is the PSG v Chelsea match on Sunday. Great. The Iliad and The Odyssey are great works. I didn't know anyone was working on an adaptation of this. Whoa! Starring who?
Just got back from seeing Superman. Good movie. But, fuck … why did Gunn have to do Mr. Terrific like that? I hated his “blaccent.” Why would he talk that way? The actor doesn’t talk that way. Why do white creatives always portray us to be, in somehow shape or form, hood? The character is not from the hood. He’s DC’s 3rd smartest man. He should speak accordingly. Bet they wouldn’t do an Asian or Latino character like that. But, they have to make the heroic, black male genius somehow thuggish don’t they? Can’t have him being too … terrific.
Was that really a "blaccent" or more you expecting him to be a proper sounding black stereotype because he's smart? Plenty of us black folks out here that are smart & not from the hood but also don't sound all proper & bougie.
I wanted to like Superman (2025), but it just didn’t work for me. Spoiler It didn’t feel big enough—more like someone handed the CW Arrowverse crew an extra $100 million and told them to go nuts. I really disliked their take on Lex Luthor. He came off as a childish little twerp, completely lacking the charisma and cold detachment that make Lex compelling. Having him shoot some random guy in the head just to rile up Superman felt like street-level thug behavior, not the calculated move of an arch-nemesis. I also wasn’t a fan of the obvious attempt to rip off the Black Noir/Homelander dynamic from The Boys with Superman and Ultraman. It felt derivative. That said, I did enjoy The Justice Gang, and I had no issue with Mr. Terrific, though it was hard to ignore that old trope where the Black character is needlessly abrasive and aloof for no reason. I did appreciate that this Superman actually felt like someone from Earth, with realistic emotions and empathy. I loved that he prioritized saving people (and animals) over punching stuff. That was one of my biggest problems with the reckless Superman in Man of Steel. I also liked Supergirl’s look at the end, and I genuinely appreciated that they put Metropolis in Delaware. I can’t stand it when comic-book cities are just vague, unanchored places.
So, because a black man talks proper, he’s bougie? The only thing stereotypical is the idea that you’re not truly black unless you talk like you’re one step away from the streets.
@samson1701 @Ra I could care less about his accent. What I like is unlike Ryan Coogler...James Gunn had the Black MALE Super Genius from the comics actually be a Super Genius in the Movies. He didn't hand his Super Genius to some Black Chick to do some Black Girl Magic BS lke Ryan did with T'Challa and Shuri.
Your respectability politics are showing. Why are you making the assumption that James Gunn wrote Mister Terrific as "hood" with a "blaccent" rather than Edi Gathegi as an actor made the choice to play the character as a black man who doesn't subscribe to respectability politics? And why would Mister Terrific need to when he's ten times smarter than 99% of the people around him? Who does he need to impress or be accepted by?
I never thought about the point you raise until now. T’Challa does sort of present like an African ruler turned Shaft stand-in. He is clearly too cool for school. Sort of like Bond also, in the sense that he uses the tools, but doesn’t create them. Hops out of his ship and then sort of throws her (or some other subject) the keys. But is that Coogler or Chad Boseman? I guess a king wouldn’t be doing his own auto tune-ups, though…
Because you're saying black folks only fit into two narrow ass boxes. Based on how you "read" the portrayal of Mister Terrific, you would definitely label me as being "from" the streets" & having a "blaccent" if I ever posted a sample of my voice. I grew up in Louisiana speaking with a very heavy southern drawl and even though I have lived in the Pacific Northwest for going on 30+ years, that drawl has been toned down a whole lot but is still present. Couple that with the fact that I have a raspy/gravelly speaking voice, so I can't "code switch" even though I use proper diction and grammar when engaging with certain white folks. That's why I said "plenty of us black folks out here that are smart & not from the hood but also don't sound all proper & bougie." And "no" using proper English & grammar does not make someone "bougie". The fact that you seem to not take into account that there are various avenues on how black folks present themselves & navigate through life comes off as "respectability politics" IMO because I've seen & know too many black folks IRL who themselves navigate life that way & judge other black folks for not subscribing to that way of thinking and navigating life.
Tony Stark builds his own tech, runs a company, and Co-Leads the Avengers. And is too cool for school as well. So I don't see what any of what you are saying would Preclude T'Challa from building his own tech. T'challa is a superior martial artist to Tony Stark but that is it. No one is talking about T'Challa doing day to day maintenance on his ship. Besides my point is Gunn replicated the core skill set of Mr. Terrific from the comics whereas Coogler failed to. But yeah Gunn is 2 for 2 with Bloodsport and Mr. Terrific IMO.
