The New History of the DC Universe in June

Mark Waid will write New History of the DC Universe, a four-issue miniseries with artists Jerry Ordway and Todd Nauck on the first issue, for launch in June. The history will be told through the eyes of Barry Allen, the Flash. The first issue will cover the birth of the DC Universe through the rise of the Justice Society and the Golden Age of heroes.

Waid described his plans for the project. " It’s a chance to realign all of DC Comics' sprawling continuity into one master timeline, and to be joined by some of comics’ greatest artists to make it shine," he said in a statement accompanying the announcement. "With new information for even longtime fans, plus Easter eggs galore, this series will be an essential read for DC fans."

The original History of the DC Universe, written by Marv Wolfman with art by George Perez and Karl Kesel, was a two-issue series released in 1986.

I remember those old Wizard magazine casting calls, most of the ideas they had were based solely on how the actor looked and not by any realistic metric. I remember them having some wild ideas, like Jean-Claude Van Damme as Gambit, Clint Eastwood as Cable, and a musician named Glenn Danzig playing Wolverine

90's era fan casting. Not much more different than what goes on with fan casting present day. Just different era based metrics.

Danzig (of the bands The Misfits, Samhain and Danzig) in his prime was a doppelganger for Wolverine. He's short (5'3"), was extremely muscular and had a primal stage presence, much like the X-Man hero when he goes berserker. He probably would have made a great Wolverine.

The series revolves around Taro Sakamoto, a once-famous hitman who retires to marry and have a child. He now runs a convenience store, but his violent past refuses to leave him alone.

DC Comics Absolute Collections in August 2025

DC Comics is releasing the first book format versions of its Absolute trinity, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, in August. All three will collect the first six issues of the respective books, at $24.99 for 176-page hardcovers and $17.99 for softcovers.

Absolute Batman Vol. 1: The Zoo is written by Scott Snyder, with art by Nick Dragotta and Gabriel Walta, with cover by Dragotta. Street date is August 5.

Absolute Superman Vol. 1: Last Dust of Krypton is written by Jason Aaron with art by Rafa Sandoval and Carmine di Giandomenico, cover by Sandoval. Street date is August 19.

Absolute Wonder Woman Vol. 1: The Last Amazon is written by Kelly Thompson, with art by Hayden Sherman and Mattia de Iulis, cover by Sherman. Street date is August 12.

The comics were DC's bestsellers in years, and the collections should find steady sales velocity through the holidays as a result.

That's what everyone was saying at the time, but judging by the way he acts I got the feeling he would have played Wolverine too cartoony.

And that would have fit right in with how comics/superheroes were viewed in the 90's. See Silvester Stallone's take on Judge Dredd in the 90's compared to Karl Urban's in the early 2010's.
