I'm surprised he couldn't get casted in the BP movie. He used to be the young hot Black male actor in H'wood.

 

Why would you be surprised? He hasn't been in a major motion picture for a lifetime. You don't get cast for major roles in such films like BP unless you are a legendary performer brought back for a major film, a vet who is consistently working in motion pictures, an on the rise actor who is hot right now or a newcomer with some buzz. Luke doesn't fit any of those categories. He would have to get a "comeback" role in a successful film before attaining status like that again.

 

His work on empire proves he still has the chops and women still love him. He got time, just needs the right project.

True, but Bozeman seems to have established a greater diversity of roles early on in his career, from Hank Aaron to James Brown to T'Challa.

Having "chops" doesn't matter. Plenty of underused actors have that. Its about momentum, or sustained work/growth or legendary status. That's why a Forest Whitaker could be picked for BP. Luke has the misfortune of not being in that status right now. Over a decade ago he would have been.

And btw "Empire" is a broadcast TV show that no longer generates awards talk. Actors no longer get any real industry buzz being on that show, especially those who do guest appearances.

 

Okay. True. But his role is as a teacher. The only actors who got any hype coming out of the series are the young ones who play the students. Their careers are just beginning so its all possibilities right now for them with no taint or any stalls. Of course most of them won't go on to elite stardom either and would be fortunate to wound up having a career in the biz like Luke.

That's why I ended with he just needs the right project, just like MBJ needed the right projects with Creed and BP. So Derek Luke will get there, his talent is the reason why he is still getting booked on fan favorite projects like 13 reasons why no matter the role, his presence is still there. Oh and he is still a favorite among women.
