No problem. What you are saying makes alot of sense to me. It seems to me that us blacks have the habit of victimizing ourselves or still have the "blame it all on whitey" mentality.

There's no doubt, to be frank, that there is still racism, but we often throw the word around for just about everything regardless. Like I said, such actions could result in black models being out of the job because of people crying out such allegations without really looking at the overall product.

I remember when Resident Evil 5 unveiled the first images and it was the main character basically shooting up crazy people. The problem here is that the main character was white and the setting is in an African location and the inhabitants were...well black. People were at an uproar because all they saw was a white guy killing black people. The previous installment, RE4, had a white guy venture into a remote village whose denizens spoke Spanish. They were Euro-Spanish of course, but no outcry of that.

Anyway, as more of RE5 information came out, the screenshots had more varied individuals, mostly Indian and African. And the other protagonists who tagged along with the main character was an African woman and a dark-skinned African general who works for this secret agency to stop any further outbreaks of this virus. They all survived in the end anyway.

 

I'm telling you how I see it. If you disagree, then fine, but don't insult me because of it. I just think you guys are making a big deal out of nothing. That's just me though.

Sorry I meant ww. I honestly don't get how you don't see it as racist. Some of glazed over my early point. Why use the term "re-civilize" there are a plethora of phrases that would have conveyed the same message without any of the vitrol. Seriously who is this to suppose inspire? Even on a basic marketing level of logic, is a consumer going to see this ad and think "wow I'm not civilized I need to get my act together" or would they say"well I am civilized. Let me get that axe body spray that'll have all the women over me". It makes no sense at all

 

No doubt there is still racism. And you're right. We would throw the word around like it was nothing. It makes us look opportunistic. I guess some of us like to use as an advantage and leverage. Like Al Sharpton, who is a known race baiter. Some of us just may be too sensitive to the topic.

As for Resident Evil, wouldn't the people be zombies in the game. If I was up against a group of zombies, I couldn't give two shits what color they were. I'd be too busy shooting the hell out of them to even care. lol

 

It wouldn't matter what word you use since they are pretty much synonymous with the main message: change. And again, revisiting the word "re-civilize", we're only looking at it from a negative light because we equate it with something without really thinking things through.

The advertisement isn't suggesting that a guy with an afro is "uncivilized" based on his behavior. That's not even considered. Rather, the fact that he has a style that was once popular, he has to change his looks. Hence the social evolution.

Crying out racism out of some poor perception without thinking it through only creates further problems in terms of misusing the word itself. Loosely defining it would only make marketing agencies less likely to hire black models because of some poor interpretation.

 

I wouldn't consider Al Sharpton a race-baiter as much as I would consider people like West and Smiley who are probably trying to capitalize on the anger of the black community relating to Obama and jobs. In fact, Sharpton attacked Herman Cain for his accusations of using race into the equation. He's been on MSNBC as a guest host.

Regarding Resident Evil, ever since RE4, they aren't really zombies. They are similar to the crazies in the 28 Days/Weeks movies with some other horror references implemented. But yes, you are 100% correct. You're there to shoot to kill because they are monsters!

 

You missed my point about who is that suppose to appeal to? It's like making an ad for women "It may not be natural but make the logical choice" who is that suppose to appeal to BBW? Since when do they insult people to entice them to purchase something. They market test shit like this and I'm wondering what man of any race is going to identify with being uncivilized.

 

That's a silly perspective to take, Andrae and you know it. You're perceiving it as an insult. You're creating a spectacle that doesn't exist. You're perpetuating something that the ad didn't create. In other words, you're interpreting something based on some residual thing in the back of your head.

Who are they selling it to? The people who like to look good. You need to stop with this victimizing mindset and at least look at the overall picture of what it's selling: cleanliness. But no, you're so fixated on the black guy in the picture and creating something else.

 

I don't think you're getting the right message of the ad. You think it's a marketing tool to bash us. Ask yourself this and be honest: If it was a white guy that had short hair and was clean shaven carrying the head of a white guy that had long hair and a long beard and the ad still had the word "re-civilize", would still be upset about it and up in arms? Of course not. You wouldn't think anything of it. The only thing you see is race/color and that seems to blind you from getting the real message of the ad. The only thing you seem to focus on is that the guy in the ad is black.

Most likely the actual message in the ad is that guys(regardless of race)that have alot of hair on their person is deemed uncivilized. Sort of like cavemen back in the day. Most people would think that cavemen weren't all that civilized. Also I think they had lots hair also. I think they were also called wild men. Would you go to a job interview with an afro and lots of facial hair or would rather go with you hair trimmed/shaped up and be clean shaven(or have very little facial hair)? I would think you would choose the latter than the former if you wanted to look more presentable, unless I'm wrong. So correct me if I am. lol Even I prefer to have my hair very short(or no hair at all)and be clean shaven. This is how I see the ad.

 

I have to be honest, I more agree with BigBrotherwise & ThePrince on this issue. Maybe they could have reworded the statement and, not use re-civilize. The decapitated head part is what I didn't like. If it was a image of a WM with his un-groomed head in his hand, that would freak me out also.

I agree with karmacoma, in that it could have been depicted better, with a before and after picture. You rarely see BM models in ads unless it's in a black magazine.

Let me ask you all, who think this is racist, if they had worded it something like "revitalize yourself" and had a before & after picture would it bother you?

I'm like Andrae, the WW in this thread saw the racist ad for what it was immediately. Some of you BM have racial Stockholm Syndrome, or are brainwashed, methinks.
