Jack Larson Dies: Jimmy Olsen From The Adventures of Superman

Jack Larson, an actor, playwright, producer and screenwriter best known from the classic 1950s comic book series The Adventures of Superman, died Sunday in his Brentwood home. He was 87 years old.

Born in 1928 in Los Angeles, Larson’s film debut was in the 1948 war movie “Fighter Squadron.” Intent on becoming a Broadway actor, he only reluctantly took the role as cub reporter and photographer Jimmy Olsen on The Adventures of Superman.

Afraid of being typecast, he agreed to appear in the series only after his agent convinced him the show was unlikely to be aired. The opposite happened, and The Adventures of Superman would air in syndication from 1952-1958.

Larson’s fears proved correct – when Superman ended, he found his ability to get new acting work severely limited by his association with the show.

Encouraged by friends, he switched career paths, focusing on behind the scenes work and eventually forging a successful career as a librettist, playwright and producer.

However, despite the role hurting his acting career, Larson never distanced himself from association with The Adventures of Superman.

Throughout his life he recalled it with fondness, and gave many interviews. He would often appear in cameo roles that mentioned his time as Jimmy Olsen, including an episode of Lois & Clark, the short-lived early 90s series Superboy, and an American Express commercial with noted Superman fanatic Jerry Seinfeld.

Larson’s long term romantic partner was director James_Bridges. The two were together from 1958 until Bridges death in 1993.

Looking forward to this. The naysayers tend to be very...strange creatures. For a show on TV, this is much more convincing and promising. Stronger efforts in making it good, compared to the likes of say...Smallville.

 

Smallville last for ten seasons for a reason. It was pretty damn good. This sounds really cheesy so far and they didn't do a great job of casting either.
And the worst mistake was putting this on CBS.

Compared to Gotham that's on FOX that is known to pull shows after the 1st season hopefully that'll change.

 

Lasting ten seasons doesn't make it any better. It was a cookie cutter drama that tried to hard to make the story of Superman a bit more dramatic in his earlier years and botched some things along the way.

Also, you've only watched the Pilot of this show. You're judging it too early (and pretty immaturely as well), since this show is being handled by Greg Berlantti, the man behind Arrow (which started off incredibly slow, and you could argue, fairly bland at the beginning) and The Flash (superior show), so at least give it the entire first season before you go on a rant of how "unimpressed" you are, all because of the pilot. That is silly.

As far as the casting goes on Supergirl, it is perfectly fine. Don't solely go by looks (and don't contradict yourself), and watch at least half the season in before you make incredulous comments. The first episode has the action bit sorted out, but as far as developing the rest of the story, I'm looking to see what it could possibly hold, since the set up looks very interesting.

 

You love going for cheap shots and insults. It's my fucking opinion based on my preference. Am I not allowed to have them?

 

Nothing I posted were insulting you in any way, shape or form. Instead of being overly dramatic and playing victim because someone is challenging you, at least give this show at least a few episodes in before making comments that seems like it's the worst thing on the planet.

 

Dude you called me immature because I think the pilot sucks and so does the casting. It's very rare where a pilot sucked and the show itself was really good.

Pilots don't indicate whether the show would be terrible throughout. Some are slow to build or don't really catch on until later. They are mainly used to set up the world and the characters. Don't excuse that sort of behavior as though it holds merit. I'm more inclined to think that you have more of an issue with a show about a female protagonist taking on things that are commonly done by the average [mostly white] male protagonist. But, I think there's a psychological component based on upbringing that is overt and residual all at once. But, I'll explore that in another thread.

There was nothing obvious you just don't like it when someone doesn't agree with you. You get very immature about it.
And if you think I have a problem with female leads then you need to ask before assuming. I was a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan I even said a Buffy/Blade crossover movie or short would be nerd heaven for me especially if they hooked up. I enjoyed Xena as kid but can't really say I was a huge fan. Some of my favorite movies are Underworld, Resident Evil, and Hunger Games franchises. There is something graceful and sexy about a bad ass woman. Also on a side note watched Charmed too and thought that it sucked especially when watching reruns, same thing with Birds of Prey. Actually as I'm writing this totally forgot about Veronica Mars that show was really short lived. Really good witty writing, wish they would reboot it.
