Known to far too few Americans is that during America's age of slavery, slavemasters gathered routinely to discuss how best to control their resident barge-toters and bale-lifters recently acquired from the African continent. Because contriving an effective pre-emptive means of quashing mutinous tendencies among blacks of the day stood paramount in the minds of their masters, it went without saying that whatever measure was employed should have to be as surreptitious as it was autonomous. Of all known subjugation techniques they experimented with, the most subliminal and self-sustaining has always involved attacking the collective élan vital of one's target demographic; planting seeds of socially and intellectually injurious behavior, then allowing those self-loathing, self-defeating habits to neutralize them more effectively than any whip or shackle ever could. As an African American, I consider far more deplorable than the fact that this tactic of keeping a given demographic at odds with itself has endured ably into modern times, the fact that we African-Americans continue to fall for it. Consider that self-destruction is mass-marketed to the African-American youth community more than to any other demographic. Those reading this whose first impulse is to disagree are invited to revisit the malt liquor advertising wars of the early 1990's, a time when it seemed that getting a "forty" (a forty-ounce bottle of cheaply-produced beer of a higher than usual alcohol content) into the hand of every African-American male in our country was imperative. Popularized by hiphop artists through advertising and rap lyrics, its consumption was aggressively marketed to impressionable black youth as an indication of masculine virility. Long-term social impact and health detriments notwithstanding, there was money to be made, and our sons and brothers were there for the fleecing. Consider also that in any civilized social climate, both ignoble and ignominious is the very idea of being arrested for criminal activity including but certainly not limited to weapon or illegal drug possession. It's nothing to take pride in, unless you're a young black entertainer seeking to gain a little "street cred" in a big hurry. Then it mimics a twisted kind of rite of passage in an entertainment domain rife with ridiculous artificially-engineered feuds; one wherein an artist who's never been to prison for outlawry or had an attempt made on his life is rarely considered "hardcore" or worthy of being taken seriously. I don't suggest that the fact that the same cannot be said for artists of other races is a problem. The true crime is that we as black people continue to dignify such happenstances with our enamored attention.
There's very little difference between you and peyback it seems. The same negative generalizations you fall back on plague black men every day. Good and bad reside in all groups. Thanks for the pass though.
You are wrong Rosey. I disagree with Tucker on this. In fact i have gone on record in the past in here before about how much i love ghetto white girls. I think they are sexy the way they talk and act. They understand more about black culture and music and clothes and slang than other white girls. I love almost everything about them. Although alot of the things i do not like about black girls, some of these ghetto white girls also possess those same traits, but thats ok. As for you tucker, you asked why go for ghetto white girls when you can get that same attitude from a black sistah? Well its not black women's attitudes that turn me off (although sometimes it is), it is their looks. At least with ghetto white girls, I am ATTRACTED TO THEM! LOL
well, as for me, not all black women have bad looks and many look better than white women, even the ghetto girls. but thats your choice and its about an individual choice--so i dont disagree with you are anyone else. I dont like ghetto black or white, as my personal choice, where as others do like em and thats their personal choice.
Honestly, with all the ghetto whites and suburban blacks in the world, I don't know exactly what 'acting' really is. How do we define 'acting' a certain way, based on skin hue?
the "Wigger" movement was enough to give me a sour taste in my mouth. here, a bunch of white youth, thinking they were being positive by adopting what they THOUGHT was Black culture(instead of a segment of black culture) used the phrase WIGGER or WHite Ni##er--as some term of endearment. I didnt find it endearing. Now, if a white girl/woman grew up in the ghetto and thats the way she was raised, I have no problem with it--she is not pretending or acting. however, we have a whole lot of suburban white kids and adults acting as if they are black hoodfolk as some sort of cool status, whilst promoting a negative stereotype of black culture. I often wonder, why dont they adopt the positive stereotypes of black culture. why arent many of them tutoring or mentoring black youth, learning about black and african history and culture, learning to cook the african american, african and carribean dishes, promoting black community and marrying blacks in the same numbers as they adopt the ghetto hip hop culture? well, just like elvis, it is the easiest part of our culture that they can adopt. there is nothing too hard about wearing some clothing, cursing, and listening to music(and for the most part there is nothign wrong with Hip HOP music), but I wonder why they dont adopt african drumming and dance, or travelling to ghana or nigeria like they do to europe just poy dog pondering!
Tell it like it is, my brotha! Totally agree on this one too. Elvis, pffffft!!! And, I agree on this last paragraph as well.
Tucker makes a good point: as I have discovered, the only true way to become closer to black culture as a whole is to become close to someone who is African/Caribbean and then to their family and friends: to enjoy the cuisine, the music (going to an African club to dance on Saturday), the language and perspectives etc etc. It helps in the relationship, as he is away from his home country and must feel a bit lost at times, but also helps me learn more, I would like to stay in this part of London for a few years where it is easier to see how a large Afro-Caribbean community live their day to day lives and which is outside most of my experience up until now. It is also a good tonic from constantly seeing rappers, negative press about 'black yob violence' in the media, which is not in my experience.
well i must say you make a few good points. however i have never dated a ghetto white girl. i've interacting with many but havent dated any. Not that i have any intention of doing so. some Black folks are sensitive about intrusions into Black culture by White folks. Not to say that it is right or wrong. The reason people use the term 'ghetto pass' is because it's something that can be "given' or taken "away." I know it may seem strange to a non-Black but when you rap, or make comments on Black beauty or culture you are skating on thin ice. It's one of those Black things. No different than WASPS having their own cultural quirks. Or any other ethnic group. I remember a friend of mine who back-handed this white dude that hung out with us from time to time because he called him a nigga. Why do you think there was so much public upheaval about Eminem calling Black women bitches? Just an example of someone getting too comfortable with the culture. It's not the responsibility of the White folks to respect a culture if they are not aware that they are over--stepping their boundaries. It falls on the "host" to educate the "guest." What happens is that a White chick will be dating a Black dude or being told she has a "fat ass" by Black dudes. Think of Lindsey Lohan when she said "Black guys like me."What she doesn't know is that most of the dudes she encounters are not brothas that really care or respect their culture. Or they are simply trying to get some easy pussy in exchange for disregarding disrespect to the culture. Sellouts. These type of white women tend to date the negative stereotype brothas and believe they are the standard by which they should measure other Black dudes they encounter by. Basiclly, they watch too much BET or MTV without enough reading up on Black history. I can respect White folks that learn the culture and then embrace it. They will have more respect and know their boundaries. Ive met quite a few people like that through afro studies courses. I hate a White person that will approach me speaking a bunch of slanguistics just cuz Im a young Black man. Im usually not comfortable enough around white male strangers to speak casually with them. I will say "how you doing" before "Whass up".
I dont hate anyone, if the guy likes ghetto wiggers thats cool with me. I am sure he doesnt like redneck girls, or girls who hunt, so we are even
People should really check out this book by Thomas Sowell. Title and commentaries below. Black Rednecks And White Liberals Thomas Sowell One of America's foremost black conservative intellectuals returns with this provocative collection of contrarian essays. Hoover Institution Fellow Sowell, author of Ethnic America, argues that "internal" cultural habits of industriousness, thriftiness, family solidarity and reverence for education often play a greater role in the success of ethnic minorities than do civil-rights laws or majority prejudices. The title essay posits a "black redneck" culture inherited from the white redneck culture of the South and characterized by violent machismo, shiftlessness and disdain for schooling. White liberals, gangsta-rap aficionados and others who lionize its ghetto remnants as an authentic black identity, Sowell contends, have their history wrong and help perpetuate cultural pathologies that hold blacks back. Sowell also examines the cultural achievements of such "middleman minorities" as Jews and expatriate Chinese whose frequent persecution, he feels, represents an animus against capitalism. And he defends Western culture itself against charges that it was uniquely culpable for slavery; in fact, he contends, it was uniquely responsible for eradicating slavery. Many of Sowell's arguments-that the 20th-century resegregation of Northern cities was a response to the uncouthness of black rednecks migrating from the South, or that segregated black schools often succeeded by suppressing redneckism with civilized New England puritanism-will arouse controversy, but these vigorously argued essays present a stimulating challenge to the conventional wisdom. Every chapter of this book is paradigm-shifting. You will literally be finding yourself finding real-world examples of the behavior that he describes around you. The black redneck part of the title comes from the fact (and when you see the voluminous footnoted documentation, you will know that he backs ups his claims) that modern "urban" black culture comes directly from the white trash areas of the British Isles, and has such traits as an exaggerated need for respect and status, regardless of consequences, or a lack of respect for law, which you immediately notice when the Terrell Owens supension comes up or the latest rapper starts declaring what a thug he is.
thank you Rosey, I have read that and many others of Thomas Sowell's books and his newspaper columns daily. He has been one of my black heros/just one of my heroes all of my life. and his treatise on this is right on!! Antwi-i agree with you wholeheartedly, wiggers and klansmen are almost the same. I however respect the klan for being honest about their hate for me, black people, IR couples, jews, asians, latinos, arabs. the wiggers, however, i have no respect for. they portray only the steppin fetchit type of black culture while they do not respect the larger black culture, history, committment to justice and fighting against racism. everytime I go to a social justice rally or meeting, i never see these kids in there. no they are out in the burbs smokin spliffs, listening to gansta rap and using the N word because some record company promotes the N word as a universal term of endearment. If a wigger called me Ni33er, we would throw down!!!! i would smack a wigger as fast as i would a klansman, cause they both are rednecks trying to degrade black people and culture
I have little tolerance for these Ghetto Imposters, myself. I prefer not to say 'wigger', because a lot of white supremacists and closet white and black racists, like to toss this word around, as an attempt to push a racist hidden agenda. No offense, tuck. I say Ghetto Imposters, because the word 'wigger', has the same meaning as the N-word, but only spell differently when referring to white person, so it's no better, and acting ghetto isn't 'wiggerish', 'black' or otherwise. It is simply, IMPOSING, on a culture that you either don't know the slightest thing about, or want to imitate, out of a childish inferiority complex, and the last thing we need is more of that goin' around in the world. It's bad enough that Feminem is one of the biggest rap stars alive because of this, let alone Uncle Toms and white racists and supremacists, crying and moaning about what content the BLACK gangsta rap albums contain, but don't seem phased at all by a Ghetto Imposing, trailer trash boy, who wants to rape his own mother, and hates all women and gays, as well as fantasizes about being a serial killer with a chainsaw, and whatever. Everytime he takes a picture, he even looks like he's about to break down and cry. Hard?!? Tough?!? Please. Feminem has so much white privilege, it's unbelievable. This proves how deeply racist this country really is.
I think you are all confusing Wiggers from Ghetto White People... WIGGERS: These are white people who grew up in nice white families and neighborhoods clearly POSING and TRYING to be black. They LOOK hip hop but really aren't. When I see them it pisses me off greatly. Recently I saw an episode of an MTV show called "MADE" where shy, untalented high schoolers hire an expert to help train them to become something they wanna be. Sometimes it is a dancer, singer, athlete, whatever. I have seen 2 episodes where white kids wanted to become rappers. Once was a male white boy who had less talent than a dead frog. Recently it was a white girl who was even worse. I dont see why they wanted to become rappers. Some white people (and I have met quite a few) are clearly "acting" like they like hip hop culture but they are really just ACTING! These people to me are wiggers. Wigger pretenders take our culture and degrade it and insult it with their amateurish attempts to imitate it. That pisses me off. GHETTO WHITE PEOPLE: Now there are the "ghetto" white people. They look hip hop and LIVE hip hop as well. You all are confusing terms here and ghetto white people are not wiggers. They are exactly that, ghetto white people. NONE of us can control what skin we were born or the neighborhood we were raised in or our families. There are many white kids (like Eminem, like many i have gone to school with, and like Tessa, a girl I have dated and currently hang out with alot) who grew up in poor, mostly black areas and are NATURALLY hip hop. They walk, talk, and act black not because they "think it is cool", but because it is WHO THEY ARE. There are millions of black kids who grew up rich and around white kids and went to preppy white schools who act white. Are they "acting" or "posing" because they think acting white is being cool, or they just being themselves due to the fact that these are the only surroundings they have known their whole lives? These ghetto white people i do not mind at all. In fact I find these types of girls very sexy. They understand and love and know black culture very well (probably know more than some blacks know about their own culture) and are very proud to act the way they do. They listen to rap, hang out with black friends, dress hip hop, talk hip hop slang, and are not racist or closet racists at all. Many of them date blacks as well. I've mentioned in past threads about how much i love white women with accents. Ghetto white girls (not wigger pretenders, but REAL ghetto white girls) talk with a real tough, hip hop style slang that I LOVE to death and find just as sexy as any southern or European accent. In fact recently the girl I mentioned, Tessa, got into a fight with her teacher because the woman asked her why does she talk like shes black. Tessa blew up on her and got mad because this IS WHO SHE IS. It is not an act. They get just as mad for being called posers as us blacks do when we get called racist names. When someone attacks WHO YOU ARE and your way of life and what you stand for, it hurts to the core and you can't help but snap. I dont think ghetto white people are the enemy, we should embrace them. They are the only white people we can truly trust and identify with. They love our culture and wanna live it and learn more about it and that is beautiful. NORMAL WHITES WHO ACCEPT BLACK CULTURE: None of you have mentioned these types of people. There are also white girls who are seemingly just regular white girls but once you get to know them, they know tons about black culture, hip hop music and slang, and are very cool people. They do not look hip hop, but on the inside they ARE. They do not LIVE IT the way ghetto white people do, but they do know SOME rap, know SOME hip hop slang and speak it when with their black friends, and aren't corny like TOTALLY NORMAL WHITES. Some white girls you can just look at them and the way they talk, walk, dress, and act and know they are ghetto. But some seem normally white but once you know them and see how much they understand and like black culture you go WOW. These girls arent really "ghetto", but they arent your typical "whitey white" girls either. These are very rare. I met a Polish girl named Ivanna at my college (she looked just like anna kournikova man, super HOTT with much better body, nice chest and ass.....but she's engaged  ) and she carries herself like your typical white girl. She isnt ghetto at all. But once we chilled and she saw my rap CD's she was like yo let me listen to that. She loved Sean Paul and reggae and Reggaeton, certain rappers, and other stuff I wouldnt expect her to know or like. I thought that was so awesome. I have met a few of these kinds of girls, and they would be my dream girl to marry. NORMAL WHITE PEOPLE: Regular white people (meaning whites who act white) dont understand blacks at all, and they look white, act white, and they want nothing to do with black culture or most blacks. They are only truly comfortable around really sophisticated, upper class blacks (like myself). Put them around ghetto blacks and they get nervous. If you notice, many wiggers act the same way when you put them around really HARD, tough, ghetto black people. That shows they are fakers. Ghetto white people and whites who accept black culture enjoy any type of blacks you put them around. .........I do love and have no problems with ghetto whites who in their own eyes are really black because they grew up that way or regular white people who once you get to know them actually know alot about and accept our culture. It is all about seeing the differences and not stereotyping, which I see alot of in these posts of yours.
what is "Acting White" mean? We dont like people saying, "acting black" so why use the same stereotypical term to describe whites? There is no, Acting White any more than acting black. If you read before Pey, I clearly said that I understand if Whites grew up in the Ghetto that they would have the same mentality as others there. Wiggers are both wealthy and working class. we have lots of wiggers growing up in working class and poor neighborhoods in the northeastern cities. South Philly has plenty of them, adn they didnt grow up with money or around blacks.
"...I do love and have no problems with ghetto whites who in their own eyes are really black because they grew up that way..." It's at points like this where it looks a bit like "black" and "white" have lost their meanings altogether...isn't it odd, or perhaps even an insult, for a white person to say that they think they are black just because they grew up in a bad neighbourhood? And yeah, what IS acting white?
I agree with ya missb, I am black, have black parents and never lived in a bad neigbhorhood(accept as a missionary kid living in central america caring for the poorest capesinos as a child). why doesnt being black and acting black connote the lifestyle I and many other blacks grew up with. blacks and whites should read "OUR KIND OF PEOPLE" by Lawrence Otis Graham. His book talks about the kind of life I grew up in. We went to private schools, belonged to country clubs and social clubs like Jack and Jills, Had Nannies, went to debutante parties and balls, summered in Marthas vineyard or the carribean St. Barths, went to Ivy League universities and HBCUs, didnt get financial aid or scholarships to go to Uni, our parents paid for it, never went to jail nor were not afraid or hate the police or government. I dont claim to be better than anyone, rich or poor, I just wish that their was equal time for blacks who arent on welfare or had to struggle or lived in the ghetto. Blacks are more diverse than the media and pop culture tries to portray us. that would be acting white I guess to many black folks in the masses, but i can tell you that none of my black wealthy friends ever wanted to be white nor do I. I respect people of all races, but I like the color God made me. be proud be strong sistah Miss!!
I hear you loud and clear tucker...if there's anything that's worth doing, it's to fight against judgment and stereotypes. Interesting book, I'll try and take a look at some point. As for me, sadly in the last few years of my life I have had much less contact with black people than I would like, so my social group is mostly white, but obviously my fella is the black person I have most contact with and he himself is from a family of high social standing in his home country: his dignity and self respect in this shines out from every pore of his body and makes me proud.
