I love to dance Tahitian. If I had more time I'd go back to merahi productions..alas..I have no time to take classes anymore.

Here is an 8 minute warm up video with basic moves. Give it a try. =o)

These ladies are very lucky. They get warm ups with real drumming. We always used Fenua at Hei Tiare.

Edit: I don't get how that one lady is dancing with socks on...this is hard work and after 10 minutes (especially in drills) I'm sweating like feck.

    And this is Drills:

    I do a version of a 3 x 3 program 5 d per week.
    1 HIIT 10 min/week
    1 1h spinning/week
    San-Soo 2ce/week
and grappling about 1ce per week.
I do their MMA conditioning training when I can, but now when I strated my 5d/ week 3x3, I need more rest of the muccles and have also dropped the 3/week spinning.

Sometimes I stay after the San-Soo and play with the pankration peeps, but Im too much of a noob to get too involved.

Aliona, I SOO OOOoooOOO wanna be able to do that!!!!!

as long as you set goals (such as being as 'fit as you can be'), working out will stay with you. That's my main motivation anyway, with the aesthetic benefits as an added bonus. The way people view you will change with the wind, and someone will always come along who commands the latest attention. But if you can tell yourself that you are staying active for your own personal milestones, detached from what the outside world thinks of you, I think that lasts longer.

    interesting

It definitely takes practice but it is doable.

Tahitian was a pre-consummation dance at marriages. For extremely obvious reasons.
I don't know if it's actually true, but, a kumu hula once told me that when it came to teenagers she could tell based on how they moved their hips, who had lost their virginity and who was still virgin. Apparently virgins move with much less sexual flicks in their hips.

    Which island?

I looked for e ho'i and couldn't find the version I dance which from auntie Maiki. So I let YouTube suggest vids and this one came up. I couldn't understand why until I watched it. She does a step called a ku'i and it is when you raise one foot up..usually while slapping the heel of the other foot down. In the hula that I learned (when u are far younger than me..closer to 20 and much further away from 40) this step is accomplished by dropping all the way down on the movement during vamp.

I watched this girl and I gave her props. Not only is she "news casting" in her open oli, but she is oli herself during the second refrain while dancing. At the pace of this particular hula, that is no easy task.

Hula and Tahitian will give you killer everything if you are diligent enough with it.

Havent decided yet... I have been to Oahu and the Big Island about 5 times each (I lurve the big island apart from Kona and anything outside Honolulu). My mother has been to both. I want to switch it up, not to touristy, neither my mom, not me likes that. Any suggestions?

For the rest, I need translations and explanations - very intrigued!!!!

I've lived here for something stupid and have never been to Kauai.

NP, you're welcome. Good luck learning the dance. I know they'll be impressed with your knowledge of their dance when you get there.:)

the one thing you want to do that most people make mistakes with is you want to keep your waist separate from your torso. So when your waist moves, your top stays straight.

We do two things to teach that. Place your hands on your shoulders and hold them still while you learn to move your waist independently and we also wear weight belts. These are hand sown with dive weights in them. They can get pretty heavy depending on how many weights you sew into them. I've worn 40 lb belts. You can't through too many ami's with those babys on. But it will teach you how to move your hips only.

I have been trying to get my mojo back for a little while now. When I'm doing my best, my routine is 3-4 times a week, 30-60 mins of cardio (elliptical, bike, treadmill) and I rotate arms and legs every other workout. Always do abs, aim for 100-150 crunches on the ab machine.

I also like to switch it up from time to time, going to zumba, pole dancing, or bodypump.

I also would love to learn belly dancing.

How's the pole dancing? I've been curious, thinking of trying a class or two next week when I return to DC.

I'd also love to lean belly dancing! It's so fun to watch, but think it'd be more fun to do :)
