I told MrFantastic the other day that this reminds me of our long debates with Iykeg about the scientific vs. social classification of race. Orejon - out!
What exactly does my state have to do with anything? Most of the knowledge and Ideas come from READING which has nothing to do with where I live. How is judging a person by their regional location any better than a black man judged for the color of his skin? As far as what white created well if you wanna get technical about it white created the term mulatto aswell as many other terms to distinguish the race of a person whom was mixed race. And as far as Re-classification goes it was those who are mixed race and their MOTHERS that have fought for their right to identify with all of their races. The fight in many states still continues.
Yup but I'm an asshole for bringing it up and no one can ever give a legitimate argument as to why they aren't. Like Regina is an obvious racial divisionist no one can defend that yet she gets to come on her and spew her thinnly veiled hate.
Ok Regina, You lost me when you said the cultural different part, because from a outsiders perspective you are simply Americans. Irregardless, of your race. Therefore the child of a black and white parent is simply American. Who happen to have a black and white parent.
Hi ReginaStar, Here is the answer, it is letter "C". He is the only one with a white parent, the rest of the guys are igbos(nigerians) and calabars(nigerians) through and through.
Shit he has Toni morrison's seal of approval bill was a good change tho. Even tho he was ivy educated at the best schools, he didn't come from a lot of money or anything. Plus he loved to play jazz music on his sax. Many people related to him, moreso than they would to these wealthy politicians.
Although American culture black and white are extremely alike in the same regional area they are still a little different from each other. Like for example the last time I was arguing this point with a certain member I was at the park with a friend I had been telling her about conversations going on here and while we was walking which was kinda slow cause we had our kids people walking fast were passing us by. First came a white couple they had country music playing as they walked past. Then came a black couple and they were listing to soul music as they walked past. I laughed with my girlfriend and said and that dude said cultural differences do not exist. HA. yes they do. That is not to say that white people do listen to soul music and black people don't listen to country music. Of course we do. But it is to say that there is certain types of music, literature, traditions, etc you might more often find in the home of black family that you might not find in the home of a white family. Lets take Christan churches as another example. There is typically a cultural difference when going into a white church compared to a black church. In this day an age black churches still mostly dress in their Sunday best where alot of white churches now do not. Some like my for example or to the point where even the pastor where a T-shirt and jeans. Ball caps and do rags are worn where in the black church you will mostly find black women with Big Hats. Preaching styles tend to be different aswell. The music. Most black churches have alot of soul in their singing. Not something you ordinary find in a white church. These are just a few examples but they are many more.
True, from the outsider's vantage point, we are simply Americans. However, that is an EXTREME oversimplification of the two groups, who, as anyone knows who has any real knowledge of each ethnic group, differ greatly in social norms, speech patterns, religious practices, world views, et cetera. And these are the product of distinctly different historical experiences.
its amazing how up in arms and begrudging some people are because someone chooses to identify as both, its hardly someones whos confused
I agree with you, but i still feel that race is a social construct, and in many cases it is in the eyes of the beholder. I have visited some countries in North Africa namely Egypt. They goe by how one look rather than anything else to determine race irregardless if your parent is another race. Therefore, if you look mostly like a particular group, that is how people will describe or identify you. For example Sophia Okonedo would be considered black due to her skin color and physical appearance eventhough she has a white mother, which makes her biracial. http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/0aSTfkV4FX2qB/340x.jpg However at the same token Monalisa Chinda(eastern nigerian) would probably be consider white(meaning Egyptians that is fair in color) due to her skin color. Eventhough, both her parents are igbo through and through which makes her simply black. Eventhough in places like Egypt she would be categorize as something else. http://palsnaija.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Monalisa-Chinda.jpg All in all i do believe people have the right to self identify, because at the end of the day we are only human.
I agree, race is WHOLLY a social construct. If it had any biological basis, biracial children would be born sterile, like other unnatural hybrids created in nature. The reason for the insistence on genealogy is because in the western world (particularly those lands under Anglo-Saxon/American control) the focus was historically on maintaining slavery, a subordinate racial caste and keeping wealth and property in white hands. That is the legacy of Anglophone countries in particular and shapes the prism through which the English-speaking world views race. And, despite the other views prevalent in other societies, the USA/UK cultural & economic hegemony increasingly imposes its viewpoints on other societies as well.
They look like they could be related to me. Neither looks anywhere near white to me, but I am aware of how a lighter-skinned person of African descent is viewed and feels in a darker-skinned African context. Just an aside: Sophie's hot and a great actress, by the way. Thanks for posting.
