Greetings everyone!!! First of all, I'm glad that I stumbled upon this site. I wish I had found it sooner. With that said, I just moved to Los Angeles by way of Austin/Houston, Texas. I've somewhat explored LA and I'm enjoying it. However, it would be a lot better with good company. How many members reside in the greater Los Angeles area?
Hi Glad you found the site! I'm in the midwest, alas, I would love to be on the West Coast, one of my fave places for sure! Good luck with this new adventure - hopefully there will be some members nearby!!! I don't think anyone on here is in the midwest, haha.
Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!!! I'm excited to continue checking out the forum and I look forward to meeting new friends.
Thank you and thanky you I was born and raised in Houston. Went to college in Austin but after graduation moved back to Htown. I was there for about 2 more years before moving back to Austin. I really think that's the place to be in TX. Anyway...after 3 more years in the live music capital of the world, I decided it was time for a change. So here I am!!! How was Seattle? I've never been but would love to check it out.
Whatsup LA? With so many new places to experience, where should I start? I'm up for anything within reason. Hiking, the beach, more of a bar goer (since I prefer to hear the person I'm trying to converse with) but not opposed to clubs, museums, etc. I do miss the peace I used to find in Texas by fishing. By chance, do you know any fishing spots. I've been to the Santa Monica pier and although the views were breathtaking, I don't see myself fishing there. Thanks in advance!
Austin is one of my favorite places, its a fantastic place - minus the traffic, its stupid for a such a small city. Seattle is spectacular! Everything you want, good live music scene, lots of hiking, bike trails right in your back yard. Gooorgeous. But I could not take the constant overcast, it really affected me - when my job gave me an opportunity to choose to stay in Seattle or move to LA - it was just simply no contest. I love warm sunny weather.. and palm trees.
I have personally witnessed the traffic problems in Austin. Its a huge city, land wise, but everything is condensed into a small area. Plus, 2 lane freeways don't get you anywhere fast. LOL! The problem is people flock there for college and never leave. I can't blame them. Seattle sounds great. I do understand about the overcast days. I visited friends in Eugene, OR several times and the weather is down right depressing. My buddy was forced to move because of it. I'm digg'n LA weather. Even though, were experiencing May Gray and June Gloom is right around the corner. Spoken like a true Los Angeleno huh? I've been coming to Cali for years so I know all about this time of year. However, upon arrival, I've always high tailed it to Ventura. So the LA scene is still unfamiliar. I'm looking forward to hitting these LA trails I've been reading about. So far I've only hiked around Griffith Observatory. I want to do the Hollywood sign hike as well. Mom is bugging me for a better picture.
Yeah, the high-ways didn't really keep up w the growth of Austin, but I love love love that place. How's The Oasis doing? Used to go there a lot during the weekends after a day on the lake. Yes, this time of the year its pretty gloomy but its well worth it - love this place (and hate the traffic). I just came back from hiking the Hellman trails in Whittier Hills and by the temple on Rose Hill. After that, you can hit the cute little uptown Whittier coffee shops. You should try it.
The Oasis burned down in 2005 but was rebuilt. It's still the best place to watch the sunset on Lake Travis. Unfortunately, they've turned the place into a much larger establishment. I preferred it when it was a bit more intimate. The food has deteriorated but the margaritas are still great. After living in Texas, I was somewhat prepared to deal with LA traffic. As you mentioned, Austin's traffic is horrible. Dallas and Houston also have serious traffic issues. Those trails look awesome...great scenery. I would love to see the temple. I will have to venture to Whittier and check it out. I plan to hike Wildwood Canyon this week. Maybe we can meet up for a hike one of these days.
