That is the nature of life, be it in dating, academics, career, friends & finances... sometimes (in fact most of the times) it boils down to luck
I got a son and hopefully a daughter one day. I'll be damned if I'm going to let them fall prey to this failed state of affairs with the american education system. A great many parents in this country could give a rat's ass about their children's education. Not me. It will be home schooling, private, magnet or charter for them. Maybe I will start my own school against the establishment.
We should all follow your example. The schools are going down hill and we should all play a role in our kid's education. Even if its two hour study nights on Saturday and Sunday. There's a storm coming and we better get the umbrellas ready.

To me its so simple. Parents just need to spend time with their kids. Two hours extra school work on weekends will make a world of difference.
Parents need to spend time with their kids, administrators need to be administrators, teachers need to be empowered to handle situations in the classroom, and they should also be paid enough to keep their heads above water, tenure should be less easily achieved and it should be evaluated every five years (and I'm a former teacher saying this!), testing needs to be less of a focus, end of year tests need to be at the END OF THE YEAR (in NC, the 10th grade writing test is March 1st...kinda makes March 2-June 8th...pointless). I am also a fan of year round school. A lot of places that have it have breaks every few months for about a week. It provides a much needed break for everyone, and teachers wouldn't have to worry about how they're going to get money over the summer. Even though you can spread your paycheck out throughout 12 months, you are still only paid for 10. I made $50 above the cut-off for food stamps when I was a teacher, and they did that on purpose. There's really no easy fix...the entire system needs to be overhauled. It does really hinge on everyone being involved, and knowing what role they actually play.

If that's what you want to do- do it. However, I would seriously spend some time talking to el.ed teachers in your area to find out their thoughts on it. A lot of teachers are quitting left and right because it's just not worth it. Almost all of my teacher friends have quit and moved on to other jobs since I left four years ago.
BLASPHEMY!!! :smt110 Teachers in the states just need to be valued, period. Pay scales need to reflect the damned importance of the job at hand. If pay scales were better and teachers were better looked after by the system, more quality people would be attracted to the profession. I really think it would help dissolve a whole lot of the issues the US system seems to have. I'd like to live and work in the states, but there's no chance in hell I'll be doing it as a teacher.
Shit teachers in my area have better first year salaries than accountants and some other professional fields. In the city without a teaching degree you start at 43k in westchester 52k. Most first year accountants started at 38k.
talking about the hassle the public give the teachers versus the pay and i also see how the public blame everything on the teachers. I am I on point so far.
I don't understand this part. How do you teach without a teaching degree!? I guess the difference is that salaries for accountants and the like will rise steadily, right? I'm surprised at the figures you stated, that wasn't what I found when I was researching teaching positions in the states. I found an average of $35k - $45k
I think its because of the area. New York is a high tax area. Higher the taxes higher the pay. Oh yeah accountants do get steadier raises. Its a pretty decent career if you don't have much of a personality. Check out teach for America.
hey hey , I have Personality. well a little I bought some at walmart 2 weeks ago and I have a little left. LOL. That is why Im changing fields to teaching. I have to go back to school tho. Im still trying to decide if I want to do elementary or high school. Im leaning toward elementary because I love kids at that age range. I have a daughter at that age range so its cool.
