To keep up with all these music threads, I wanted to ask the boards what their favorite bands are...

    My favorites are:
    Sevendust
I like Sevendust because it is good alternative music. Something that is rare these days. I was first put on by Lajon Witherspoon. I dug the fact that he was black. More Black people should do rock and roll. Lots more.

    Insane Clown Posse
Say what you want about them, they are the most creative and original rap group there is. They have a huge fanbase in the underground music scene known as Juggalos. I'm one of them. Woop Woop!

    System of a Down
I loved this heavy yet quirky band ever since I heard their first single "Sugar" on the radio. This band is simply awesome...

    Slipknot
Now I'm a metal head. These guys are fucking brutal. BRUTAL. I love their music, and they deserve to be as big as they are now.

    Ice-T and BodyCount
Ice-T opened my eyes. Such politically charged music. Such energy. These guys were my first taste of punk rock, even though they weren't a conventional punk band.....

So guys and Gals, who do you like?

The top 3 I'm about to list are in order from most favorite on down. The other 2 are just bands or singers that I regularly listen to:

    Megadeth:

I've loved loved loved them since "Peace Sells, but Who's Buying?" They comfort me when I'm down. They have been "with me" through thick and thin. I always turn to them when I need a release from stress, anger, sadness, whatever. And don't get me started on how awesome Dave Mustaine is...he's a genius lyricist and songwriter, a genius, and extremely talented guitar player, and I'll forgive him his voice because of everything else he brings to the music table. ;-)
And I love the political lyrics most of all.

    GREEN DAY ;) :

I love their music. It's fun, smart, politically charged. It's music that's harder than the stuff I listen to on a daily basis, but still fun enough that I can car dance to. I love Billie Joe Armstrong - I'd marry him if I could. LOL. I love their attitude, and I have listened to their "American Idiot" CD so much I know it backwards and forwards.

    Maroon 5:

Yes, they really are my third favorite band. LOL. I love their music. It's typical pop music, and I'm more than okay with that. They also have some very sexy songs. :smt112 And holy crap, I'd be a polygamist and marry Adam Levine, too.

    Pink Floyd:

For their "Darkside of the Moon" album and song "Comfortably Numb" alone. Enough said about them.

And here goes whatever sliver of credibility I have left, LOL:

    Britney Spears:

Sue me, I love her music. I can't help it, that she sings catchy dance tunes. This genre is what I listen to on a daily basis.

Wow, serious old school cool there Fly, outstanding choices especially EW&F I have many of their tunes on my ipod!!!!

    For me;

Stevie Wonder - the very definition of a musical genius, "Living for the City" paints a vivid picture with words, positive, strong uplifting music.

Sting - see Stevie wonder description, the man crosses genres with songs that are ethereal and just pure genius, classic example "7 Days"

Stuart Goddard (Adam and the Ants albums, not so much the later stuff) - huge talent, original and bold music, nothing else even remotely like it... well maybe some early Bow Wow Wow.

Afro Celt Sound System - Listen to the "Release" single...says it all, original, blends different musical styles and cultures, awesome stuff.

Joe Sample - Crazy, insane amount of talent for one man to possess, his melodies and compositions are complex and intricately beautiful.

    1) Sade- this band(my favorite) plays the soundtrack of my life.

    2) Portishead- This band's music really touches the darkest and deepest parts of my soul.

    3) Morcheeba- very calm mellow and meditative music.

    4) Supreme Beings Of Leisure- for some reason whenever I listen to this band's music, I feel "spiritually naked" as though all of the masks that I have worn to get along in the world have been stripped away leaving me "liberated"

    5) Olivia Newton-John(1980's) I love her entire vol. 2 Greatest Hits with "Magic" and "Xanadu" being my favorites.

well if we are only talking rock music:

311: greatest reggae rock band ever.

Skindred: another awesome reggae metal group from England with a black lead singer.

Killswitch Engage: heavy metal group with a black lead singer who rock hard and have great catchy choruses.

Linkin Park: Loved their first two CD's, the third was kinda bad..waiting for them to come back with a vengeance.

36 Crazyfists: Alaskan metal hardcore band who are very unique and heavy!

not nessesarily all the best per se, but...

    Bob Marley and the W's
    Pink Floyd
Anything Godley and Creme has been involved in (e.g 10cc)
    Black Sabbath (original set)
Talking Heads (and anything that David Byrne (and Brian Eno) has been involved in)

Pantera- One of the hardest metal bands there ever was. Phil Anselmo's voice, the late Dimebag Darrell's guitar riffs, Vinnie Paul's drums, and Rex's bass combined for a headbanging good time
Faith No More- Influentual avant-metal band. Mike Patton's voice range was out of this world
Mushroomhead- Cleveland, Ohio based ambient metal band very influenced by Faith No More and Mr. Bungle. Here's a little bit of what they're about:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNGckHZpC7o
Tool- Great alternative metal band. Their music puts me in a good mood every time I hear it
Slayer- One of the Big Four thrash bands (Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax being the other three). They been kicking ass for over 25 years, and they're not stopping now. Reign in Blood and Seasons in the Abyss are two of their best albums to me

    U2
    RHCP
    Midnight Oil
    INXS
    Live

I could go on forever. The top 4 are consistently standout for me, but mostly the older stuff. RHCP are keeping up well, however.

I didn't know we had so many old school listeners here, my vinyl collection has been reviewed already, but worth repeating:

    Cameo
    Con Funk Shun
    Brick
    The Barkays
    Parliament/Funkadelic

All of whom (- Brick) I have seen in concert
