Are you kidding? I'm certain parts of this country employment is totally flat meaning no work for most. And even if you're lucky enough to find work who says it's enough to live. You live in Cali so you know minimum wage covers nothing.

You said it well, my dear! My thing is that she does have options to pay her own way.

This is a valid point. I do think she should be trying to find something for the summer, then possible p/t work during college. I don't know what her college situation will be... commuting vs. living there, but I know it's usually easy for students to find work on campus.

I think another thing to consider is at 18 how equipped were most of us to be completely on our own? I know I wasn't. It's not like you turn 18 and all the confidence and know how of adulthood automatically comes to you. I honestly just see a scared kid reaching out. At 18 you're still a kid basically

Lol begging for money from complete strangers is now standing up for your principles?

That's your sheltered life experience speaking. I and hundreds of millions of people were taking care of our shit on our complete own 18 and even young as 14.

I don't know what parts of the country specifically have "no work", but there is hard to find work and no work. I've seen nothing that indicated she has tried to even find work. People in Cali do have the same problem but are still working and getting by (barely). They have to manage their money extremely well though. Again, the military is an option. May not be ideal for her but again, you gotta do what you gotta do. She can go to school at the same time while getting benefits to where she doesn't have to worry about work while in school.

Most 18 year olds on their own struggle. They don't turn to go fund me accounts to help pay their way though. They learn to live within the borders of their very limited budget and they find ways to make due. This young white woman instead, looked for the lazy way out and used the race card to reel in the sympathy dollars. I call complete bullshit that she "can't get a job". She can. She doesn't want to. She wants to go to school full time and start her "real life". Tough titties. There are consequences to every action, even when we're doing what's right. She stood up for her principles...like big girls do...now she can figure out how to deal with the aftermath... Like big girls do. Life isn't rainbows and butterflies and at 18 she's old enough to weigh the pros and cons of a decision and then make the choice that she feels is best. I have no sympathy for princesses and that's exactly what she comes across as. I have even less sympathy or care for ww who try to use racial injustice to their advantage (which is exactly what her go fund me account does).

Where does she live and what's the job market. This ain't 1995 when you were 19 and you could get a retail job at Sam Goody or the Gap. Different times

Not everyone can make it in the military. I know I couldn't. And seriously that's where we're at risk your life to just be able to make it in this world? Id rather see more beggars then more vets my dude

That's mental and that's up to you. Physically, most people can get in shape to do it. This idea of the jacked soldier looking like a Gears of War character is non existent. The military is actually an easy job(depending on your MOS and mental toughness). I didn't make the conditions in this world but I wanted to make it so I did what I had to do to get the money I needed for school. And one will never know if they can make it in the military of they don't try.

According to the article, she's from outside Memphis, Tennessee. So I assume, she's from a Memphis suburb.

Yah, so then the kids end up with a bunch of them in the same apartment. I see it every day. Some will end up with 4 girls in each bedroom (bunk beds) so they can make it work. And I'm talking about kids who's parents live in very nice homes in very nice areas. There are ways to do things. It depends on how bad you want to do it. It sucks that her parents decided to bail for whatever reason, but that doesn't mean she's not capable of pulling it together and doing what needs to be done.

Student loans, scholarships, work through financial aid at the school, etc. There are ways.

First off, you just made me 5 years older than I am lol. Shame on you.

Secondly, she may not live in a place that has a crap load of jobs but I'm sure there's a Dairy Queen or something that could offer her some hours. It's not easy when you're first on your own and many of us found that out the hard way around 18! You learn to lower your expectations real quick and adjust them to what's actually realistic! Wants vs needs. It's done every day by young people all over this country, she's no different.

This is my issue with people who can't see beyond their situation or their past. What Dairy Queen? How many people are finding jobs there? Do you know the stats on youth unemployment? Whatever scenario you might have in your head trust me life isn't like that for so many people. Not my situation has never been my situation but I take the time to read and listen. The sad truth is unskilled labor isn't there like it used to be. Grown ass people with experience are struggling to find work and I think this idea that's she's lazy and spoiled is the same sentiment that makes so many people believe that about the homeless. Not every single person has the options you had or have.

Lol I love this stuff. It's the exact same rhetoric republicans use to justify gutting our healthcare system and paying adults next to nothing to live on. Hey bunk with 3 other people in a one bedroom. Grind away your youth and ambition wasting years on shit that doesn't help you get to where you want to be. So to all of you life should be a never ending grind?

But that's the thing we can identify right and wrong.
Its like a slave saying why do these people care so much about freedom, you just work hard and you keep a roof over your head and food in your stomach. Know your place and you'll be alright. I didn't create this world so why expect more from it.
    See my point?

You think I'm not able to see past my own experiences and I think you give far too much leniency than is necessarily warranted. The point is, she's an attractive, young, white woman in the south... Tell me what demographic has it easier in the job hunt? She could get a job, she chooses not to. It's that simple.
