Rapper Xzibit: 'Planking Is Racist, Not Funny'


After 'planking' seemed to have swept over Hollywood faster than you can say 'Kabbalah,' there's one lonely adversary who's standing up against those that are laying down. Rapper Xzibit took to Twitter to express his extreme disapproval of the trend.

"Planking is THE dumbest sh-t ever," Xzibit tweeted (via TMZ). "#Planking was a way to transport slaves on ships during the slave trade, its not funny. Educate."

From Rosario Dawson and Ellen Page to Justin Bieber and Katy Perry, celebrities have been laying down straight and narrow left and right.

"Don't get it twisted," he continued. "I care less where your dumb asses lay face down and take pictures of the shit, I'm just telling you where it came from."

Although the position in which slaves were transported during the slave trade was not technically referred to as 'planking' the fashion in which they were positioned on wood plank beds was not unlike the stiff, face down, palm to side style.

The celebrity world is famous for their apt political correctness but we're not so sure they're going to give up their beloved light as a feather, stiff as a board ways.

 

Rappers keep racist stereotypes going all the way to the bank, it's funny to me when they get all high and mighty. So how does X explain white guys/chicks planking? Is it still slavery when they do it?

 

I think we could find an historical link to pretty much everything we do. Doesn't mean that the link was intentional.

 

To claim that planking is a subliminal racist joke is rather like claiming that there is subliminal racism if a group of black kids willingly decide to sit in the back of the bus. If pushed, one might concede that there are vague similarities. But these similarities end where lucid thinking begins. There are so many real injustices in the world that one can revile, but it seems quite clear to me that this isn’t one of them

 

Thats it! Nobody should sit i the back of the bus, it's racist! Somebody should tell Xzibit to take on that if he bothers to rant about this.

 

PLANKING has zero to do with the transportation of slaves.....and the idiots repeating this crack me up.

hmmm interesting.....when we debate issues we need the message and not attack the messenger. just because x is a rapper doesn't invalidate his point......
point 1-comparing this to jim crow busing, is apples to oranges. back then it was a racial hierarchy, today we have more free choice. planking is more comparable to baggy pants. most ppl who do it, don't know it originated in prison.
point 2- it's not about who is racist and who is not. it's about an ignorance to history and understanding these "trends" and the celebrities who push it onto the masses.
point 3- x is giving you information, so no one can claim ignorance, so you know exactly what you are doing.

 

Part of me thinks Xzibit put this shit out there as a joke.

Kinda like one of those dudes who thinks the game of billiards is based upon a racist concept; using a stick, some might call it a 'spear', a white ball is used to knock ALL the colored balls in the hole, until the white ball knocks out the remaining BLACK 8-ball for the win!!

 

Very disturbing of him to equate what is clearly a prank joke....to the slave trade. It demeans and disrespect the real trauma that slaves experienced in the gallows.

He is in fact, incorrect about that being a slave position. During transport, the were crammed in either a squatted position; standing position; on their back with knees bent up (no room to extend); knees drawn under chin and leaning on their side and the next captive laid leaning on them in the same position. As if slaves were given the luxury to stretch their whole body ala planking - that would have taken up far too much room.

Anyway, again he's an effin idiot to even THINK to compare it to the horrors of slave transportation. It would be like someone bitching about this...

He's an IDIOT because there are NOT similarities. Planking is NOT laying on your back, its LAYING on your front (btw that diagram you have is a diagram of a ship and an impression of its human cargo. Photos of slaves on ships suggest they squatted and descriptions have them with knees tucked - which is worse, imo).

How the hell can that ignoramus factually say PLANKING's origination was in slavery transportation? There is not photo or diagram or descriptions back then to back him up. And you are buying his bullshit?! If anything it simulates DIVING, or a GYMNASTIC positions, or even a position POLICE make suspect get in when attempting to approach or handcuff!

So tell me, did the neck tie originate in slavery too? Did chains around the neck?
