In response to the original question, this is a grave injustice to the students. Many school systems in Georgia are laying off personnel and many of them will be teachers by the end of the school year. There have been more teacher work days to compensate for what would be furlough days. There have been mass student/teacher protest outside of the state capital building. They can blame it on the recession but this stuff has a lot to do with the misappropriation of funds. A lot of my friends work in the school system and boy do they have stories to tell. I feel sorry for the kids in Detroit though. The proposed 44 schools being closed is just too much to handle.

It's all over. The county I live in has to cut 40 mil. from the budget. They have failed on a bond proposal numerous times. It would basically be an average of $100 extra in taxes per house. They don't use good methods before the elections though, to get the message out. :(

They are upping class sizes to over 30. Not good. They need to get some of the dead wood, "I have had this job for 30 years and am useless" administrative types instead of the teachers. They always seem to do the things that affect the kids in the worst way. Not understandable.

I had 8 hour high school days too, but that was because I had ROTC formation to report to every morning. Then of course there was football also, so you can tack on an extra 2 or 3 hours of killer practice during the fall/winter season, spring off-season conditioning/practice and summer camp. You guys had it easy.

    :p

I'm sorry to hear about your county's budget woes. Its sad when the useless "administrative types" will not do what's right for the children. In order to accomplish "new" things they have to create "new" ideas and sometimes it involves getting "new" people, particularly "new" directors and administrators with a "new" mentality. A local county has reached its limit in referendum tax proposals so new taxes can't be used to offset the budget deficit. New taxes wouldn't solve the problem anyway because the dent is so deep. Its a mess. Home school for children looks very appealing right now.

you're kids may lose the social learning they get from regular schooling, but I could imagine there would be tangible benefits from home school. Your child's education would be more dependent upon their family, rather than some aching district looking to cut corners. Plus you don't have to worry about pesky bullies lol.

Lol at the bullies. I have three friends who were home schooled and they are very smart. Their mother made sure that they had a social life by allowing them to participate on local recreational teams and summer programs. They have a well adjusted social life now. All kids learn differently though. I guess if the teacher and/or parent recognizes the child's learning style it could be a benefit to the child's overall educational development.

Less distractions for one thing. I think that helps. No girls to flirt with during class, no shooting snotballs through straws...all that stuff that builds character but takes away from the academic process. As for the recreational stuff, I never thought about that. There's always karate school, or local youth teams, especially at that age. So yeah, you got a point. I used to wish I was home schooled. Shit, I would eat what I had in the house, not that cafeteria garbage.

Blame all this to our idiot, previous president, George W. Bush. He's the responsible for causing all this mess that he created for eight years. Americans were so damn proud to vote for him more than five years ago..

That could have prevented if we vote him out, but we didn't! Now President Obama will have to take care of this mess that he created! But good thing is, economy is booming, but most schools are hurting, we need to teach our children more! :smt085 To prevent anymore dropouts, you know?

Those kids today should read more books, teach them to writing and such more. That we should take education issue seriously. This is why I'm going to make sure that my children in the future get that BEST education that they'll ever had in their lives for long time to come.

You should realy look at greenspan during the end of the clinton years to see the full picture of this nightmare. The guy actually believed that the banks could regulate themselves which help bring us to this event. Bush gets a lot of blame but there are more people at fault like greenspan.
