The State of Illinois announced today that it has signed into law the four day week for all of their schools. My family down in Georgia has said that that state is moving in the same direction. Here in Virginia the idea is being pushed around to "save money". There are indications that other states are looking at this as well. How in the hell can our kids compete with countries like South korea, India, China and others who are redoubling their efforts to get the most for their children to compete against us. Those kids are going to school six and a half days a week. It's bad enough our kids are not learning as they should or getting the quality education as it is now. President Obama recently addressed this very thing with industry leaders recently when he asked the South Korean President what was the most demand he had to make to address education in his country. The Korean President said that the Korean parents are so demanding to give the children more education early like math, science, english etc... How in hell are our kids going to compete against the kids in those countries who are preparing for the jobs of the future?
Not forgetting shuttering schools entirely...and, the most damnable thing, consolidating elementary, middle & senior high schools in one building. And people today still wonder why The United States Of America is losing its competitive edge.. Sad. OpinionsCartoonStudios@Yahoo.Co.UK
Um, no they didn't. http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/clout_st/2010/03/house-approves-bill-for-fourday-school-weeks.html They are going to permit the option, not make it law for all schools. The public school system is lacking funds. It's one of those socialist setups, see? Ya gotta put taxes in to get smart kids out. One of those things means more to the voting public than the other. We'll see which one it is, ultimately.
blacktiger...you are going to be really mad when the USPS stops delivering mail on saturdays huh? :smt076
Yes I will. BUT, I'm willing to deal with that one. NOT robbing the kids of this country. We should find the damn money. If we can fight two wars (wasting billions) rebuild other countries infrastructures (wasting billions) giving money away to corrupt foreign countries (wasting billions) then we damn sure can find a few billions for our kids. I'm a defender of the kids.
This, I agree with. The fact that any school district in this country is lacking in funds is a disgusting thought to me. How else do we expect our country to remain relevant? However, IF a school elects a 4 day school week, the kids will still be in school the same amount of hours, they'll just have a 3 day weekend, instead of a 2 day weekend. But the school districts that are truly strapped (like the districts in towns where many kids live MILES from a school on farms) it'll save those districts millions cleaning the schools one less day, in busing the kids who live so far from school, etc. It makes sense for those school districts.
Wish I had 4 day weeks, back in high school. Public schools are hurtin' for money. My old school is broke as shit, but they just redid their football stadium to make it actually look like a stadium. Pfft. Whatever, that's on the administration, or whoever.
Don't you wonder though, if at some point in the long day if the kids will lose the abilty to focus and zone out. I think a longer day may be counter productive to learning. Financially it would make sense.
Then never emigrate to Europe...or for that matter Canada or Australia, either.....as NO Saturday postal delivery is - and always has been - a GIVEN. Just my tuppence, m8... OpinionsCartoonStudios@Yahoo.Co.UK
Yep, that thought crossed my mind as well. Some of the kids they interviewed for the news said that longer class periods would be helpful so they have more time to understand the lessons and ask questions, etc. That part makes sense, but yes, we're asking teenagers (who notoriously don't have the longest attention spans) to stay in school longer each day. And then you have the 2 working parent households who may now have to worry about what their teenager will be getting into on that extra day off of school whilst their working.
i seriously don't know why they are dragging their feet on this one...we do not need to get mail 6 days per week...close the post offices another day and funnel that money into our schools:smt009
BT: We need stop wasting money on building jails and so-called war on drugs.. Our gov't should focus more educating the youth and repairing our infrastructure.. BrothaAjax: Since the election of Ronald Wilson Reagan back in 1980, the public education has been under assualt by advocates on the radical right that support vochuers, charters and do away with public schools entirely. I'm more in favor of six day school week.. Especially those students that are speaking english as second language and struggling in the classroom..
we can cut out football, basket ball and those huge arena that cost billions and invest it in the school system.
I don't think you are telling the whole story here. I went to school for four days a week. Schools are required to have a certain amount of time to teach the kids. What will happen is the children will stay in school longer on those four days like I did. You get the same result but you save money for not opening on friday.
I went to a 4 day school. Most of the kids enjoyed it. We didn't have to show up on friday. There wasn't any zoning out because you would of been up any way.
I used to go to school from 8am to 4pm M-F and I hated it. It was such a long day. I liked some of my classes and disliked the rest. The day seemed never ending.
