Absolutely not. I'm way too old school for that. Plus, my father gave me his name, literally (I'm adopted). She takes my name. Period. No hyphens either, unless her career depends on name recognition. End of story.

But, if it works for others, cool. Do what fits.

I rather have the name of someone that I love over the name of the family that held my ancestors as slaves, so yes.

I'm not a traditionalist about most things, but I am about the name thing in marriage.

Women need to give men space to be men and be recognized as such in a marriage.

I'd rather we both keep our own names than my taking my wife's family name.

My last name is my married name. I didn't change it after divorce because my kids have the same last name.

I'm pretty sure a man wouldn't want to take my last name, I think that would be really weird. I think it would be weird even if I changed it back to my maiden name.

i wouldn't want a man to take my last name...it is certainly progressive...i think it is more of a celebrity thing if you want to attach yourself to a famous name...or a dynasty name like kennedy...

No. I'm very old-fashioned when it comes to some traditions.

It would depend on why he wanted to do it. My lean is toward taking my husband's last name, and changing my middle name to my to my maiden name. Hyphenating is also something I'd consider. I have no intention of giving up my last name altogether since I gave my son my last name and I prefer to continue writing under my own name.

A friend of mine who went that route did it so he would have the same name as his wife's kids. She was never married to her children's dad (he died while the kids were small), but changed her last name to his so she and her kids would have the same surname. My homeboy agreed with her reason for doing it and decided to follow suit when they married.

Does anyone want my last name?

A (Bulgarian) girl I know said that if we get married, she wants me to have her last name. She wants to keep tradition strong with the heritage. I told her..."You do realize that if you do that, then it would sound like a porn name, right?"

I'm a bit of a traditionalist (in terms of me keeping my name), but I have no problem with a woman choosing to keep her name. I don't have any children, but if I did marry somoene who chose not to change her name... I would want the children to have my last name.

I have a friend who is in the same situation as I am. She changed her name when she got married, they had kids (the kids have the same last name) and they were married a long time then got divorced. She kept her married name because of her kids. She said if she gets married again she's not going to change her last name. So, she would be married to a man and still have her former husband's last name.

What do you all think about that one?

That's fine, especially when making things work for the children is the primary consideration. I admire people who make those sorts of sacrifices for their children.

In my case, my wife kept her name and our son has a dual last name, hyphenated (mine first, hers second). That being said, i wouldn't mind if my son had been given her last name only if her last name was a really rare name and she didn't have any brothers. I would even change mine to hers if that were the case. If I marry again - which I doubt - I'll consider it if those conditions apply.

So my wife has another man's last name?

Nope. Call me imature. Call me insecure. Call me sexist. Call me selfish. I don't care. That kind of baggage I won't deal with.

I may always love her. If I loved her enough to want to marry her, I will miss her terribly. But, thats just not a situation I can live with.
