The best thing about coaching is seeing the kid who's a real pain in the ass in the classroom blossom on the field. These are usually kids who have a hard time sitting still and are more inclined to kinesthetic learning, which, unfortunately, is not embraced by our current educational system.

Same thing with karate for me. Words I will take with me forever is Winners never quit and quitters never win. I need to get that shit tattooed on my back.
It gave me confidence when I didn't have any. Academics have always come easy to me and to some degree certain aspects of martial arts but when things come easy its that much easier to give up when they become hard. Sensei Hornblower would never let me quit. Damn I need to check that dude out tomorrow after class.

at that level, it's not about the money or the prestige..it's about the kids. like I mentioned in another post, I learned a lot from playing organized sports. You pick up more than just catching a football or kicking a soccer ball. You learn a lot about yourself and how you deal with tests against your very character. And you gain mentor figures in older teammates and the coaching staff. If you're lucky, you'll learn stuff that no one can take away from you. Stuff that's timeless and unforgettable, that kids who didn't participate in such activities will not grasp until they're older (provided they actually learn at all)

it's hard to explain stuff like this to people that never experienced it. It's easy to say cut this, cut that, if you never had such influential figures. I definitely wouldn't be me without sports or martial arts. I feel much more rounded and perceptive as a human being, because of those along with academics.

Exactly! Thats why we end up in 100 page threads about athletes not being lucky but actually working their asses off to get to where they are.
I think a lot of us forget teaching isn't just restricted to classrooms either. Coaches and mentors are important yet almost invisible.

that's why you have movies like 'Remember the Titans,' and 'Glory Road,' to remind us that social progression is not just restricted to theoretical viewpoints and lecture, illustrated in academic text. Lots of movement as a society was facilitated through sports. Jackie Robinson in baseball, Tiger Woods with golf, Arthur Ashe in tennis.

It's sad to see sports get swept under a rug by people too ignorant or too arrogant, to see past their own academic worth (or lack thereof).

    They dawdle too much.

Their effort is that of a dilatory person.

A less languorous behavior would be a start.

If all they want to do is simply cooperate in the scullery, then that will be suffice for me.

Teaching is almost invisible pierod. The reason why no one cares about coaches. Not so much mentors since that is something that is done often(your father, mother or teacher) Coaching is something that barely affects anyone but the few athletes in comparison to the many who are not athletes.
