Why do people keep bringin up "what happened to our ancestors?"
Did it happen to u? So why are u judgin people on what "our ancestors" have done. Cant you use your on experiecnes? When my husband (bm) teasingly while watching anything that has some kind of hate crime in it (while i am gaspin at it, and sayin all kinds of cuss words against the racist in the show) says their ur ancestors I am so shocked!! Ashamed to think that any of my ancestors had anything to do with anything like that. Which i am sure, some where in time it probally has happened. Any ways no matter what our ancestors have done why not base on your own experiences?
All Questions are in General. Not for just one race. Not meant to cause name callin or any other childish remarks!!

We are all influenced by what happened in the past. There is no way around that fact.

We do have a duty [that's a bad word to some] to learn from the past so that we may see the mistakes of the past and work to not repeat them. In a perfect world we will keep the good from the past and cast off the BS. If only life was that simple.

We should use our own life lesson to shape the future but when we teach those lessons to our children we will be teaching them our history which will influence them. They will keep what they believe to be good and cast off our BS if we are lucky.

Sometimes BS is the hardest thing to cast off.

Yeah, like the BS of this thread popping up in the forums. Who the fuck cares how guilty she feels about slavery? And, it's not like anyone forced her to know or learn about it, and no one in here even brought it up to her in order for her to make this useless thread.

If white people can't handle their own history, then black people shouldn't be expected to forgive and forget their 'contributions' to our history as well. I'll be damned if I'm gonna throw away any of my history because it hurts the feelings and ego of some 'prefect and precious' white people.

People like irisrett are the same kind of white people who always bitch and moan about the race card and how we should just let go of the past, when in fact, their attitudes and mindsets are always trapped in the past. How can we ever forget when white people like her are around to remind us of what we had been through?

4.) it was explained pretty good by Designer. without ur tantrum
and didnt i mention in my thread this was just out of my curosity!!

wait wait havent i seen u causin arguments on other threadss..

and by the way u dont know me personally.. i dont use the race card on anything... which by ur post u seem to come off as the type who does...with that said i am not going to stoop to ur undesirable level

This whole conversation is about you using the the race card, in case you didn't catch that...

You used a video your husband showed you about slavery as a reason to start this thread, and then tried to dodgy by saying that it applies to 'all races', when it doesn't, furthermore, you used a lame excuse to start it, you know, the thing you said about your husband showing you a tape about slavery? What does that have to do with all of us holding onto slavery?

And, don't whine about me starting arguments in here, because 1) I'm usually the one to settle most of them, and 2) I'm not the only one in here arguing with anyone, or supposedly starting arguments in threads altogether.

If you take the time to read through the forums, you'll see plenty of people (men and women) using their own experiences, but you went and started this thread anyway just for the sake of easing your conscience.

 i did not say anything about a film on slavery if u read it i was talkin about any video with hate crimes... you r so set on ur own race that you only read into my post what u wanted to read into it!

hate crimes are not only agaist black people!! some white people have had hate crimes happen to them for lovin or standing up for black people, or get fired from a job by a black manager for being with a black partner.
thats why "all races" was thrown in there. and whos whining refer to ur first post ..

and u are the one who started the arguement on this thread
and what would i have to ease my conscience about .. i have done nothing to have to ease it for..

    Have a good day!

Films on slavery contain hate crimes. That's a fact. Your argument is regarding our opinions about slavery as black people, is it not?

I never said that hate crimes are only against black people, did I? Where did you see that? Now, you're getting off tangent. From the way you type, I can barely tell what you mean by anything, except from what I can decipher.

I sure did, because I see the agenda behind it, and what do you have to ease your conscience about? Well, you should already know. You just made a thread about it.

    Thanks, you too.

you know something it takes a bigger person to back down from an argument and thats me because ur makin a mtn. out of a mole hill... what started out as a ? out of curosity has turned into and argument not worth my time..

if u treat all ?'s this way i would hate to have a legitmate, need to know ? answered by you.. i am so glad not all people have your point of view on things.. that would only limit any kind of progress being made to the good..

To everyone else who reads this thread i am so sorry to have asked a ? that would lead to an argument that was not its purpose.

    Have a good day everyone!

Given the fact that i [correctly] predicted exactly where this thread was heading, i am not going to offer any opinions but some of us could do with a little spell check for future purposes.

    back to topic ...

I think this is one of the major social illnesses in this world - that people are not able to look at individuals but tend to divide humans into alleged "homogenous" groups, either along racial lines, or by religion, or nationality, or gender, etc., and then blame individuals for the actions of others. "You whites... ", "You blacks... ", "These muslims...", etc. etc. etc.

Your husband should know better, especially since blacks are often confronted with generalizations themselves.

Silver you just did what you said we should not do with your "...since blacks are often confronted with generalization themselves.... "we" should know better..." reply.

If people are people [and I believe we are] then people are going to have very different reactions to the events in their lives.
But again we are all going to be moved one way or the other by past events.
There really is no way around that.

Can people break free of past ills and move forward?? YES!
But than in itself will depend on how people look at themselves and how other people treat them in that regard.

I call it like I see it. Make all the excuses you want to about it, but you know you had an agenda.

If I treat all people this way, then you would see me treating all the people in here this way, but since you don't...

oh, and more than enough people in here share my points of view on many things. You still have some reading to do.

I knew what the purpose was, and I stated it. I guess you got my type of answer for a reason then. My point from the gitgo was to emphasize how white people, SUCH AS YOURSELF, use these types of conversations YOU START to shift blame about your past, but at the same time, claim that we still holding on to this and that. I thought that I made that more than clear already.

Are you implying that I'm somehow always wrong, even when you are?

    1. I only fought with 4

    2. I would tell you, but you would keep asking me more questions about it :p

Well, I didn't say *you* (we) but that *HE* should know better, because I assumed that the disadvantage of black people caused by a general prejudice (generalization) against people of color is real, but yes, maybe it's time to reconsider this assertion.

yes, but the question as I understood it, was: 1. what is about those people who didn't live through certain events themselves but somewhat internalized them regardless and 2. blame noninvolved individuals for those incidents simply because the individual and the perpetrator are of the same gender, "race", religion, nationality, etc. ?

Lets look at it by using a different example:
1.2 million women are raped every year in the USA alone, what would be your reaction if a woman you are with would tell you that eventhough she was never raped herself, she nevertheless has sexual hangups because of those 1.2 million raped women, and would tell you everytime she sees a rape scene in a movie or hears about it in the news: "Look, thats your gender".

    How would you respond?
