When I was in Paris I found it interesting that there is a very visible and significant Franco-African subculture. Unmistakenly french, but unique in its own way. Comparable to the African-American culture in the US.

Do you agree? If so, how would you compare the two? Thanks.

I've followed french music for a while when my ex had the french tv and I've notice that too. Seems like there's the french/ norther african "sub-culture" too.

I belong to these two cultures , african-american by my father and french by my mother.
I got many friends from those countries and I went in Africa and stayed there several months.
African people in general think african-american's culture is the best one in the world, and most of them think their culture is not very diffrent from african-american's one. You can find it in their way of thinking : they really think that black people are all brothers, so they feel very proud to see great success of african-american's artists.
Even in politics, many africans ( french or not ) celebrate Obama's victory as if Obama was their own dad, uncle, son, or brother.
People in africa got a great respect for all black people in general, even if they prefer by far, africa-american people.
In general, franco-african's culture and african-american's are not very different.African-american like McDo, disneyland, basketball.
    Franco-african do the same.

However, difference between these two cultures exist because Franco-africans belong to two cultures (aside from their own culture ): african-american's culture and the french one.
they appreciate what african-american do, and they do the same for what french people appreciate.
In many things; sports, reading, hobbies, food, dressing, music, cinema, franco-african are a bit french, a bit african-american and a bit african.
Even if, they prefer things which come from usa.
This why they're slightly diffrent from us.In general,African-american do not show interest in things which come from other countries, because usa are considered as the most powerful country in the world.

    Thanks Signor Naso :)

I think that french hip hop in the closes to the american one I've ever seen. It's mixed with african and arabic flavor sometimes, though, and I love it!!!

    Yes, sometimes only :
french rap is not very different from the Us one;The only thing which is different is language.
I france, rappers come from diffferent cultures:
some are franco-african or west indies, some come from north-africa ( maghreb ).
Songs from franco-africans and west indies sound like us,
But those which come from north-africa are really mixed with african and arabic flavor.
    ;)

There is a smattering of Americans in the Lisbon area, but not a whole lot. Most work for NATO or the US Embassy, or own small businesses.

As far as blacks here, there are a lot, and really two types. Threre are portuguese citizens who happen to be black. Mostly descendants of Africans who moved here many generations ago. There are portuguese first in every sense of the word.

Then there are a lot of recent immigrants from Africa, particularly the lusofone countries (Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde). All have portuguese as their first language.

Race relations are very good and you see a lot of IR couples, BMWW and WWBW.
