http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/flyers/20110922_Fan_tosses_banana_peel_at_Flyers_Simmonds.html didn't know my own hometown team had any brothas on it in the first place sad this spanish soccer style shit is coming to hockey games now
So you're from Philly, pettyfficerj? Pleased to meet you. I'm just up the road a piece. Simmonds says that he has come to expect behavior like that, even in 2011. What's sad is that he shouldn't have to expect any different treatment. People are people. We all bleed red.
im still surprised the flyers have a black guy on their squad. Maybe they're worth buying tickets for now
Lol! I was a huge Flyers fan back in the day but never got to a game (only Hershey Bears games.) My ex was stationed on the Kennedy in the mid 90's (in dry dock in Philly) and we went to some Bulldogs games (roller hockey). Do you remember them? I think Tony Danza was an owner of the team. I really enjoyed those games.
Nice to see the responses by fellow players who made it abundantly clear what they thought, including those who know him personally. The tone of the responses is much sharper and poignant than the nonsense tolerated in some parts of Europe at sporting events where these kind of things transpire. In life no matter what there are always always going to be these cesspools of human indignity. Rising above such scum is the mark of true character, confidence and self respect.
I was aware of him when they signed him. How could I not - he's very handsome. Obviously too, the Ontario "fan" threw the banana cause Wayne was kicking Detroit's ass by scoring 2 of the 3 goals for the Flyers. (I know they eventually lost, but still). I also liked this comment made by defenseman, Braydon Coburn when asked about it... “Pretty impressive concentration by ‘Simmer’ to score that goal,” Coburn said. “He said he saw (the banana) in the corner of his eye, but he didn’t even break stride. Pretty good skills by him.” http://www.freep.com/article/201109...-Wayne-Simmonds-after-racial-incident-Ontario
You're right, Kuno - very cute! (Love those pouty lips!) I might have to start watching the Flyers again!
Sadly this story is from the city I live in...it's a huge embarrassment to see that happen here or anywhere and even more amazing how in such a large crowd no one "saw" this peron do this. It's pure bullshit and makes me sick that it happened!
Now Sean Avery of the New York Rangers is saying Simmonds called him a gay slur in their recent game a couple of nights ago. A preseason game I was watching as a matter of fact. The NHL says it can't verify what Simmonds said to Avery via video evidence whilst looking into it.
