The word really doesn't bother me. I use it sometimes and I really don't care if other people choose to.:smt102

They don't know any better because if they did then they wouldn't say it. I was in South Africa and their derogatory word is "Kaffer". If someone uses that word in South Africa it is punishable by law. In her attempt to establish common ground with me, a girl from South Africa came up to me and said "What's up my nigga?" I looked at her strange because she was so confident saying it. Someone had to explain that the word "Nigger" was equivalent to the word "Kaffer". When she found that out then her whole demeanor changed. She became repentive and earnestly apologized. If someone that is not from America can understand the serverity of the word then it says a lot about Americans who use it at the drop of a dime. It's amazing to look at the type of image that we give off to the rest of the world.

It's kinda awkward for it to be a white girl saying it, but nobody should be saying it(Yeah, I'm still a die hard NWA fan. Fuck off). It depends on who says it to me. If my friend says it, I'll give them a shittly look, but since they don't say it a lot, I don't trip much. I've cut back on saying it, a lot, but me and my friend(who isn't black) use it when quoting the Boondocks n' shit, because we love that show. Me and my friends use the word "moulie", because we're always talking about the Italian scene from Eddie Murphy's Raw, so we have a whole Italian thing going one, too. It's one of our major inside jokes.

If it's in that context, I'm not trippin', because I laugh at race jokes(that's what all black comedy is, basically). My white friend is trying to stop saying nigga, after living in Oakland for a year. He will even let us slap the shit outta him if he says "nigga" 5 times in a night.

Not sure if his profile is private, but that's the link to the video of him gettin' slapped.

I can sum this up by saying the previous 23 posts seem to hit on my own opinion of this.

I wouldn't tolerate it for a second. I can't stand when other blacks use it just the same.

For us (Europe, my region) it is already critical to call some one "black" - it defines some one of another race, what is at the end racistic, if it´s not important to mention that difference. That other word, I´ve never heard here anytime. It´s unthinkable and the person, who uses it would insult himself- bottomless..

The black community takes it easier, but I really don´t see, why anyone should need it.

Hahaha you gotta love Philly for that. I'm gonna miss this place. The word will die out one day. None of us will probably be here to see it. But it'll be a better place when it does.

I had a friend in Graduate school that was from SA. We were downtown Houston one day and suddenly she went stiff and totally lost her exhuberance and wanted to leave the restaurant. She later that day told me that a couple had refered to her as "Kaffer". I guess the SA couple that used that words thought they could safely use it in Houston...
It really disturbed my friend, she said it just brougt back a lot of bad memories from SA and that was the reason she left and never thoughts she wouled hear it here.

Its statements like this (and this type of thinking in general) that really bother me about my people (I say this knowing that I'm about to get the accusations of being a racist white man).

First of all I agree with you that whites shouldn't be using the N-word. But I'm a little perplexed by the comment about us not having anything that they aren't entitled to. Are you unaware of the fact that it was a name (title) that was given to us BY whites?

I've heard the whole "we started using the word as a term of endearment". "As a means of taking away the negative power of the word". This isn't even close to the truth.

We started using the word during slavery. We used the word because it was so frequently directed towards us by whites. It was a word used to demean us in the worst possible way. It was a word used to describe the belief that they had that we weren't human (we were Niggers). It was just a common place way to refer to a slave.

So the slave (believing that he was inferior to his masters) started to refer to himself using this term. Not as a means of "taking away the power of the word", but because he to thought of himself as a Nigger.

So "IF IT WAS ONLY A WORD WE WOULDN'T BE TALKING ABOUT STUFF LIKE THIS"? Wrong. The more legitimate question would be "why do WE use the word as if it's a badge of honor? A name that was never "our own" to begin with because it was given to us. A name that still obviously causes you pain or anger if heard from the mouth of a "non-black". I guess now I know what they mean when they say "ignorance is bliss".

I'm with Karma on this one, & would like to reinterate that n**** carries a a loaded connotation. So why use it of there's such confusion, black people sure shouldn't. Thinking about it, I really only hear it from young folks, ignorant people, less educated people and the likes. There is an exception to every rule but...I think you know where I'm going with this, in all my short years on this earth, I don't think I even need one hand to count the nber of times i've heard n**** from me elders, more educated (post BA), yadda yadda yadda...I know we can come up with something better than n****,just don't use the shit aight lol

PS a lot of kids live on my block and will often come down to speak to me because I'm seen as older, but not ancient you know, and they will go off at the mouth with the n-word, so I told them that they couldn't use it in my presence or on my property...we came up with a substitute: ninja, & they loved it. So no I have block of about 30 kids varying in ages going around calling each other ninja lol

It's just absurd. I don't want to be around anyone who constantly uses the word.

I'm with karma on this one. I don't even use the word myself, even though I'm black it still burns my tongue to say it.

Same here. Regardless of what someones' skin color is, it just sounds trashy and ignorant to use. Especially in public places or around little kids.

I would not use that word ever! A couple of my BF's friends throw it around every now and then, and it just makes me sick to my stomache.
