I thought we were talking about the right to education.
And yes nearly everyone here had to pay their own way but there are a lot unseen or unknown battles we never had to fight that someone else did knowing it was right. They didn't have the attitude of well it was hard for me so why shouldn't be hard for others. This particular girl isn't what I'm arguing over it's her situation maybe I should have made that more clear for everyone. I think it's gross that banks and institutions have made things this dire. You basically have to mortgage your future in order to be educated and productive. It's wrong

 

Then we need to start teaching black kids they are lesser than white kids and that the white kids are sacrificing something just to be around them so they should be ready to pay that price for them.
They are teenage kids what responsibility do you expect this kid to take on for dating a girl he likes who likes him back. For the majority of their life they are constantly being told race doesn't matter that everyone is equal.... until you start dating then there's a premium you gotta pay for being bestowed the blessing of dating someone white? Really?

 

Well unhealthy lifestyle is subjective. Some of these poor areas have people so isolated from anything outside a bodega or had them hooked on junk food like crack not to mention junk is cheap and it's usually what people can afford.
I hear you though but I think education is a matter of life and death. Without where can you go what can you achieve. I would be homeless and on the street without mine.

Also I have a problem with people saying they are suspect of ww not dating young for whatever reason but specifically this . We had people throwing stones at people at the idea they waited till they are financially independent or fear of being disowned.

So if you are throwing stones then you pay their rent and car note.

 

How much do you know about the college system in countries like France, that have already implemented a model similar or exactly like you are suggesting for the USA?? It would be interesting to see to some factual comparisons. If you are up to it, I think it would make for an interesting thread.

If not we may as well be talking about Starwars or the Jetsons. I would like to live like that too, but it's not feasible unless the technology is in place. Likewise a workable system must be in place in order for this free college idea to work as visioned.

 

So there should some of your older posts saying that because a man is white we shouldn't assume he has it easy and gets any help, whether or not race is a factor. Because that is true, they don't automatically have it easy. I just hope that apply that way of thinking to more than just this girl.

 

Yeah, in lower income areas, I can understand and wouldn't likely hold it against them. But the families who keep a full fridge with decent income who can afford gym memberships and whatnot, I'm a little less likely to help.

 

Or you mean like Finland that seems to do an alright job.
Or even Canada that allows their students to go top notch schools like McGill for a quarter of what we pay for b.s. schools here.
I agree it may not be perfect but can we go towards progress. This current system is awful, it's insanely expensive and does more harm than good for the students.

 

Been saying that for awhile now. I especially noticed it when I was dating a girl close to your age and seeing what her brother had to go through. If you ain't got it you ain't got it. Yes being white may make certain situations easier than someone in a similar situation but overall being poor just plain sucks. It's a human rights violation in my opinion.
Also said this after the election we all lost. If democrats like Hillary actually took the time to listen to the pain of the people in the rust belt and the south they could have seen this coming. People are hurting.

 

My solution would be to reduce cost for state colleges in the north east through government funding or incentives. If the rest of the country had prices similar to the state colleges down south then we would be good to go. Just saying they do an alright job is not enough for people to take progressives seriously. There is really no free lunch in economics. When you get serious and do a real comparison it will surely show.

 

Yeah but we can greatly reduce the cost. Free is the starting point on the negotiation so we can get to true affordability. College shouldn't be more than 10% of your yearly income.

 

Since you said that then why give money to her since she didn't sacrifice anything?

 

Also if colleges were "free" then taxes would be higher.

Go to a cheaper college and stop going to a "Nike" college and go to the one you can afford

 

This is not an accounting problem. Because in order to get "free" you are going to have to change the entire system. You can't just put numbers out there without looking at doing a major overhaul to make something like 10% feasible. That's going to cost something whether you can put a number on it or not. Question is do we want to pay the cost? If you don't yet know what the cost is you have some homework to do.

 

Well we already pay it the money is allocated to pure waste in the form of military ordinances that never get used. Literally billions in tanks and bombs that just sit there getting outdated while we debate over who's gonna pay for things that we can easily pay for. There is no reason our military spending should count for over half our spending when we have the biggest military in the world even when you combine all the others. Shave 3 percent off that and there's your free healthcare and education with enough left over for better subsidized housing

 

Comeon Mr. Accountant, you know that's not how funding in the govt works. You can't just take from one area and toss it to another.

 

No it means we demand that the money we already spend get spent where want it to be spent. Less tax loop holes less military spending no increase in taxes. See how simple that is.

 

Why Not? You can say that's not how it's worked in the past but why can't we decide differently now. It's like you guys all claim to be forward thinking progressives but have absolutely ruled out the possibility of change.
