And while they're at it, it should be mandatory that it be in ancient Swedish or Norwegian with runic writing and subtitles.

Totally! But we know this is really racial shorthand. They don't care that the guy isn't of Scandinavian ancestry, they just want everyone to be white. The lead actor is about as Nordic as Crocodile Dundee.

I say the fine & sexy Idris Elba can do whatever the hell he wants. His race doesn't have a damn thing to do with the story imo.

    Great pics, Sin. :smt050

I know it's not African mythology, but ever hear of the movie "The Jazz Singer"? So, while not an exact corollary, it did happen? :p:smt003:D

Or more recently Dragon Ball Z. When white people take the roles from non whites its a new spin on an old story. When non whites do it its being totally inauthentic? Wtf

Thankyou and I agree. He's there to bring the ladies to the film because, without him, I know I damn sure wouldn't be interested in seeing it.

Hats off to Idris. He was hilarious in Rock'n'Rolla, the last Guy Ritchie film.

I remember that. I bet these are the same type of people who tell minorities to "use your imagination" or "it's not real stop playing the race card" or "What about White Chicks huh? when we complain about white people always being cast in movies that are either based on minorities or remaking movies and taking roles that were originally played by minorities and replacing them with whites. Which happens in western media ALL THE TIME and has since the birth of televised media and the movie industry.

Thor is a comic book series with alien looking characters like Loki. Hardly an intimate and accurate portrayal of Norse Mythos anyway. It's Marvel's piece and the director's, so they can cast whomever and whoever they so please.

21, Dragonball, Prince of Persia, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Akira (not out yet), Stuck, A Mighty Heart, The Lone Ranger (somewhat debatable) are some I can think of off the top of my head and in this past decade but like I said it's been going on since at least the 40s.

Occasionally you see a minority character playing a role that was originally a white person or written as a white person (ie: Tara Thornton in the Sookie Stackhouse series is white, Nick Fury is white in the comics, etc) but you see far more white actors taking roles that are based on minorities either historically, in books, or in film.

Not to mention even many movies ABOUT minorities largely revolve around White protagonists and their point of view. The Help, Ghosts of Mississippi, Wind Talkers, Cry Freedom, A Time to Kill, etc.

This largely comes down to many whites in the US not wanting to see films with too many minorities. They think if the characters in the movie aren't white, they won't be able to relate to them. Yet unfortunately most minorities in this country are more than willing to see movies that have all white casts and do so time and time again. Which is why I wish more minorities would boycott those types of movies, or at least stop paying to see them.

edit: However should add I do think that Hollywood sells white American audiences short, and if there were more movies, with more minority characters with protagonist roles (and I'm not talking about the same recycled action/thriller roles where you see Will Smith, Samuel L. Jackson, Denzel Washington, etc over and over again) white audiences would be interested in seeing them. It would also be nice if Hollywood would green light movies with minority characters where the focus of the story doesn't have to center around race in some way (ie: Booty Call, Love & Basketball, The Woods, Baby Boy, etc)
