these comments are very true wcj930 5 days ago If he were a black grandfather with a little white grandaughter and the same call was made. The black grandfather would have been shot dead by the police. filmtress 3 days ago in reply to wcj930 That is so true! Remember they tested this senario on "What Would You Do". Where a black man comes in with a white little girl and sits at the table. All of the white people started looking at them. One actor pretended to be loudly displeased. Asking the man if the child is his. Then when he asked other reastuarant attendees they too expressed concern. So it's the price of having step children and grandparents. Did Baraks grandparents get asked this question alot. I mean they DID raise him.
It's screwed up that it happened, but if some idiot calls the police saying she saw a White man chasing a little Black girl and walking off with her, a cop is thinking there's a child abduction in progress. The cops did the right thing, IMO. And the idiot who phoned in the report apparently couldn't read their body language and pick up on the fact that both of them were together. No he would not have been shot dead....hopefully...if he were a Black man with his White grandchild. I think he would have been arrested too and only would have risked the use of deadly force if he resisted. Honestly, most grown men who are out alone with a young child, especially a preschool age female, have all kinds of eyes on them. And if anything looks unusual or peculiar about their 'relationship', I hope to God someone notifies authorities. So many kids are abducted when strangers assume the adult and child are family. When a child's safety is involved, I prefer to err on the side of looking like an idiot. Actually I'm a little surprised anyone gave a damn enough about that little Black girl to be concerned about her safety. That's a good thing.
I think it probably wouldn't have gotten to that point if he'd given the constable his name and address when she asked for it. Not giving up the info just because you don't have to is stupid if it could prevent shit from getting out of hand.
I think if he was Black he probably would have known better. Know your rights, but don't antagonize the police. They can seriously fuck up your life.
There's still uncomfortableness between those whose phenotypes differ.......to a noticeable extent but we knew that already
When you think of all the cop screw-ups where they have the bad guy right there, but miss it (ie: victim Jaycee Dugard, Jeffrey Dahmer's male teen victim, John Wayne Gacy blew off cops)... While 9 cops is excessive, the cops didn't do anything wrong...he just had to wait it out. If anyone has ever gotten a ticket, they take forever, let alone sorting out this screw-up.
I'm kinda with you on this, especially the last sentence. Truth be told, an old white man with a little Black girl is not a common day pairing. My instinct tells me the 911 call wasn't about "a white man chasing a little Black girl" unless the person calling figured such a dramatic lie was the only way to get a cop out there, asap...probably an observer's pedophilia suspicion, especially if he was holding her close to him...but they couldn't tell him that. The other cruisers just didn't get the word that he had been cleared.
Interesting that this came up since I was talking to an ex today about this. She adopted a little girl a couple of years ago and when we were dating I never thought about it but if things had worked out I would have probably adopted that little girl too. It would be weird to see me walking around with a little blonde hair blue eyed kid. Most people still can't process that. I'm with Andreboba on this one though. Better to be safe than sorry and I am surprised that anyone noticed or cared when it was a little black girl. Maybe things are finally changing.
Interesting update http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/20/update-austin-police-say-_n_1288947.html?ref=crime
That update story says "he lied"..bull!...Ok, so they didn't draw tasers and he withdrew that part, but when you have a gaggle of flashing lights, cars and cops charging you, your racing mind is conditioned that they are at least drawing something to protect themselves...cops don't roll up like that on a person with a handshake extended. I cant believe they cuffed him without so much as a question! And those officers were already told 23 seconds PRIOR that it was his granddaughter, for goodness sake. This misunderstanding nonsense has gotten way out of hand here. The fact remains the Austin police harassed an innocent man, so no they did not stop a kidnapping, but they're sure acting like they did.
Here's the thing though...the report was of a man kidnapping a child...when it was established it wasn't true, he should have just been allowed to leave - end of story. When that cop asked for his name and address, it isn't something the constable just mentally files away - she WRITES that down in her complainant notebook...and it gets attached to her 911 response. No way in hell do you want your name or address confused, alleged, involved, exonerated or submitted alongside a child abduction. Not in this cyberspace/Google day and age. Now of course it's too late, but the cops screwed this up, not him.
