http://news.bostonherald.com/news/national/south/view/20120524thousands_of_pages_of_evidence_detail_the_killing_of_famu_drum_major/srvc=home&position=recent Why is there NOT ONE thread about this? This is fucking sickening the things they did to this kid before he died.... "Champion’s initiation began with the "hot seat." Like those before him, he was told to take a seat at the back of the bus. A fellow band member instructed him in how to protect himself by assuming the "crash position" — sitting with his knees pulled toward his upper torso and using his forearms to cover his face and torso. A blanket was pulled over him while members kicked him and beat him with drum sticks and brass-drum mallets." Unfuckingbelievable. Shut the band program down, fire the president, and get people into that "University" that account for shit.
I disagree,i think the people, that has been held accountable got what they deserve, they went way way too far, being a former member of a prestious black university band i went through a process to so call welcome you to the organization however there was no severe beatings, hitting with mallets or anything of that nature, and i feel you can't hold the director or anybody else accountable for the actions of these young adults the upper heads(administration)can only warn his members/students not to do anything wrong and behave accordingly that's it...if they don't follow those instructions and do as these idots done hold them accountable for what they did.. don't punish the program and the young adults wanting to be a part of the FAMU marching 100 don't kill some other kid dream because of the failure of others, they went to far with a intiation process, and they are now held accountable. Now probation or something like that is sufficent meaning y'all fuck up again we shutting it down. That is too good of a program to let go they were smoking in the late 80's and still smoking today...keep it alive.
I have to disagree with that. This has been an ongoing problem at FAMU for decades and it's never been properly addressed. This kid died. A few weeks before him a member had her thigh broken. And a few years before that 2 students were beaten so badly they had kidney damage. You ABSOLUTELY hold the director and the school accountable for what goes on in their own programs, especially if it's a problem that the program director and the school knew was ongoing. If you have a band program where students are literally being wounded, maimed, and killed then the program needs to be shut down. Period. As far as I'm concerned that's more than enough accountability. This is not the first time something like this has happened. This is not the first time they've had to temporarily suspend the program. FAMU band hazing incidents have a record that stretches back decades. And STILL nothing effective has ever been done. That's not a matter of a few bad apples, that is a culture of abuse and hazing that has passed on from class to class and generation to generation and been allowed due to people continuously making excuses for it or turning a blind eye. It would suck that future students who would be a productive part of the band wouldn't be able to take part, but as far as I'm concerned that's clearly the fault of FAMU for allowing this problem to continue for as long as it has. If they'd ever addressed the issue seriously and effectively instead of ignoring it until things like this happen, then I doubt this would be a serious problem. But so many people are so quick to make excuses for that band, the people who run the program, and the FAMU administration it's no wonder that this continues to happen over and over and over again. They've had more than enough chances to get it together. And they've fucked it up time and time again.
Chocolatcrm4u and Jase; you both make great points...Ultimately imo, it falls on the shoulders of the assaulter/s (and thus killers). It's just too heartbreaking that this young man with his whole future before him...is now dead over a pathetic ritual gone too far. Hazing serves zero purpose. His poor parents have to be.. just devastated. RIP, young man.
Hazing is completely retarded. Oh, and this guy was no kid. He was 26, too old to be worrying about this "acceptance" shit. Although, this was his major, so I can kinda understand him wanting to join really bad. Not his fault he died, but should've called them on being dumbasses and refused to go through with the hazing.
That's wrong to punish the program directors ,now if this shit happens again,go after the directors, and higher ups the people of authority these are grown men and women and someone made the statment he could have refused to go through the ritual, but hold the killers accountable.i know nothing about the record of FAMU and hazing incidents now if this is a repetitive thing get those directors and higher ups out and make a change to the program i never heard anything about other incidents if so yeah make a change..Don't end the program entirely through
there's no white people involved you know the SOP here now...add a little bit to the story such as....Black band-member hazed by fellow bandmates (who just happen to be white or 'white-hispanic:' that's the cool thing to do now), and you've got treads overlapping threads here
