List the university you attended? Did anyone first start dating IR in University?

Cambridge, and I would have been hard pushed, as the black population of Cambridge is something like 3% of the student population...there wasn't a single black person in my year, or my college.

It felt wonderful to be on the river especially in spring, but I didn't like the early mornings! We used to have to row at 6.30 usually.

i know, we would have to break the ice on the Narragansett river to row every morning and it was brutal at 5:30am

and then running until 830am and then practice in the evenings as well. but I was in such good shape then

Just the gym these days, and not as often as I should. Looking forward to running up some mountains in the Lakes at Easter, though, best way to get back in shape fast.

misstressb, did you play squash at University and do you still play squash?

Noooooo....that would require both high fitness and hand-eye coordination, both of which I lack. My parents used to play a lot of squash when they were younger, though.

why do you think the black population is so low at Cambridge? what did you read at college? take as your concentration?

There were some studies done by Access which were quite interesting. It is suspected that the population is low (especially amongst undergrads) for reasons of self-selection, and also because the quota of black public school/private school students is still so low in the UK. We shouldn't forget that Afro-Caribbeans only make up 7% of the UK population, mostly concentrated in London, but equally 3% is a low black population for a world class university, particularly since this is mostly in the graduate population and often rich Nigerians. I say self-selection, because judging from case studies which were made, it seems that many very able black A level students visit Cambridge, decide it all looks abit white and intimidating and they don't have what it takes, and simply do not apply. Those who do apply, and get to interview stage - which is horribly rigorous for everyone - are, again, often intimidated by it. Those who get through the application and the interview are as kitted out as the next person, but then when many of the undergrad colleges have a 50/50 divide between entrants from state school and entrants from public/private schools (in essence, both meaning private eduation) BUT only 7% of school kids in the UK are educated privately, you know something about the maths is not quite adding up. Fact is, Cambridge like faces who fit into the pattern, and these types of kids often come from public/private schools or the higher level state schools - I don't like it but it is the reality.

I took English literature, it was great fun: also some Greek and French literature on the side. How about you?

    I see, that is understandable.

I love English Lit. are you a professor? lecturer?

I read American, Latin American and US Southern History, for both Undergraduate and Graduate degrees
