Last weekend I was talking with my mother about my 5yr old nephew. She tells me he likes his teacher and some of the little girls in his class. My mother asks him why? Response " because they are white and black girls are too thick". I found it hilarious at first but then later on I thought about where he could of got that thought from. More than likely it came from my brother since he hates his wife.

Are you all saying these kids are self-hating because they prefer white dolls/barbies?
But it's not okay for BW to say you men are self-hating because you have a preference for white women?
Granted none of us are kids or toys...but what?

I probably didn't phrase this very well. I meant more like why accuse kids of being self-hating when you men here should know it's not true and a preference for a different look doesn't have to mean you hate your own. I don't understand that.

well maybe the word "hate" is the wrong word. its a thing of wanting to be something that you aren't and learning to look down on yourself.

i think michael jackson is a great example. Joe jackson used to always tell michael (his own son) that he had an ugly nose. Its sad because the pre-surgery michael was a handsome black man but he learned to hate himself. And the rest is history. Even with all the money and talent, his father emotionally handicapped his son and now he is gone for good.

but alot of black people hate themselves. And i see how hard it is for certain types of white people to understand this.

i think it brings up the issue of LOOKISM and Beauty standards.

it is true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that the culture in which a person is raised plays a role in how a person sees things. not all people are the same. one mans gold is another mans silver.

but you cannot deny that while all people have their own unique brand of self-hate, that american brown people (especially african-americans) are obsessed with complextion. this is discussed here constantly the preference for either white or light skin here in the U.S.A. vs other parts of the world this is less of an issue. or how people sometimes date intercially for the wrong reasons because of HOW they see race and what it means to them.

but the doll preference shows how atleast with brown people how we LEARN this at a very young age. And it becomes apart of our psychology. I as a child was guilty of some of this on the male side of things. its all programming.
