what is the obsession with sharing events in your life with people you don't know IRL

I use FB to keep up with friends and family members because they all live quite a ways. Some of my old military friends are all over the globe. It's nice to keep in touch. I rarely post anything personal but I am guilty of posting pics of restaurant food, however I did make it. Lol.
