I know as a country we are in deep trouble financially, but we need Presidential leadership for more investments in science and technology for the long term future to compete with the rest of the world that is starting to leave this country in the dust. I sent President Obama a letter yesterday (I know he will probably never see it) on five science and technology initiatives I would like him to consider. He could be a historically greater President like President Kennedy did for the Moon Project. I suggested five key projects: (1) Return to the Moon to establish a permanent colony for human habitation. This would be the next step from the Space Station, (2) Create Space Planes that will transport passengers into space and advance aviation technology. Get the private industry more into it than the government. This will create a new industry and the spinoffs will spur the economy, (3) A National Extreme Computing Initiative to go five magnitudes of order speed in computing development beyond what he want in exascale computing and to include faster network speeds through a network of computing utilities, (4) Build a High Speed Accelerator in this country like what Europe has in the Hadron Collider to spur advances in physics and material science in which the U.S. was once the top in leadership, and last (5) Go for Nuclear Fusion as the energy of the future, if we can use nuclear energy for naval carriers for decades, we can create nuclear fusion as the next step as a new source of energy for commercial use. Probably will go no where, But at least I make my voice heard. Thinking big is what this country use to do. I hope we have not lost the will to continue to do so. I would rather see small steps taken in this direction than big steps until we can get these other problems we have solved like the budget. As I tell my white friends, as a black man, I can think beyond race. I say do this for all races of kids today and future generations to come.
