    Interesting posts.

Are these girls born in Jamaica? Most likey NOT. I suspect living and/or growing up in Jamaica you have to do what the Romans do. I guarantee they have Jamaican boyfriends they are trying to impress. Imagine being a white girl and your parents moved to Jamaica for their job and either going to public or private school she has to assimilate in the culture or going to Jamaica and deciding to live there for a long time or forever you have to do things to blend in . . . this is one the results. Dancing in a Caribbean dance hall.

I have been to Jamaica over 10 times and have seen the poverty of the country events like you see in the Dance Hall are equal to Miss America Pagents. I can imagine the reaction the black Jamaican women that she is competing with if she won!!!

During my stays I have met a few white women who come from U.S., Russia, England and other countries who vacation there and decided to make it their home where they are willing to take jobs that they would think of back in their country.

If you have the time and the money go and see Jamaica and not from a resort.

I think that Japanese chick actually did win a few dance hall contests if I'm not mistaken?

I am of Jamaican descent. My father was Jamaican, and my mom's father was from Grenada, with a stop in Panama (I found out that HIS father worked on the Canal) before coming here.

Jamaica has a smattering of English, Chinese, Japanese and East Indian. How they relate to the culture, I'm not sure, since I haven't been back since I was a teen. I think the Chinese have assilimated okay, and the English are there, the money ones anyway.

The poverty was staggering, but when I was there, the locals were so so nice. And I was up in the hills.

If you wanted a vacation spot, Grenada was awesome. The hurricane from two years ago almost destroyed it, and they are still recovering. My grandfather had a crib there and he had an INCREDIBLE view of the harbor and the capital. I'll never forget it. Grenada was and still is a poor country, but you would never know it as the people are fantastic there. But I digress..

I'm pretty sure both girls are locals of some sort...I'm sure Kono didn't learn to dance like THAT in Japan. Jamaica is a little more diverse than you think.

lol exactly my thoughts. None of those girls were dancing, it was more like gymnastics to me.

That's the new generation "Dance Hall". I don't mind it, but yeah it isn't like back in the day.

Wow, you have made a huge nubmer of generalisations in your post. Enormous, actually. "A jamaican boyftriend she is trying to impress". How offensive. I did not peep the clip then but I have seen it before, the gal's all over YouTube with mixed reactions. And guess what- she's Jamaican, period.

For someone who claims to know alot about Jamaica, you display alot of ignorance about its racial and cultural diversity.

I have been fortunate enough to meet a very famous Jamaican who is a little bit white, a little bit black, a little bit Asian, and he was alot of interesting things to say about growing up in a place. Culture is environmental as much as anything else.

I strongly feel that though particular cultures/sub cultures may have people who have naturally evolved as their 'guardians' no one owns it. That is why your post about what you call Jamaican (by that, I guess you mean black) people would think is kind of odd to me. I know people might be surprised, as it is about expectations, but it is wrong to assume that someone who feels an affinity with or really enjoys aspects of a culture is doing it because of someone else/some need to fit in.

I have always loved reggae music- my black boyfriend doesn't like it at all. I constantly had people asking me if I knew so much about particular kinds of music because of my ex, or that I 'dance well for a white chick, who taught you?' - no, it was just because it's what I love. Case in point.
