So, I take it you that you would now agree that the notion that some cops will lie in police reports to get out of a jam and back up other cops who've made a mistake is not purely fantasy from the imagination of Hollywood screenwriters.

no one said it was fantasy at all

i was just stunned that no one gave the police any credit

the story could have went either way, and just so have it, it swung in the way of doctor gates

to think, all the way (before knowing the facts), that the white cop (or any other white cops in the future) are just simply out to get black folk, is sad and makes me wonder why anyone here would be dating white women

I hear what you are saying here POJ and there is truth to it, I think the reason some, including Raocha, were so skeptical of the police from the start is due to the reputation and high profile of Dr. Gates, the immediate initial fact disclosed that he did comply and produce his ID's, and the long history of racial profiling in the U.S. It seemed pretty obvious just from the initial facts reported that the police would have to drop the charges and admit "regret". What I think is not getting enough discussion is the fact that Dr. Gates was already most likely, tired, grouchy, seriously jet-lagged, irritated and bothered by the door being jammed, and just wanting to get to a shower, and relax/sleep after a loooooong flight from China. As much travel as I do, I can certainly relate to the taxing physical and mental rigors of international travel, the last thing you want to deal with after a long trip, is the police knocking on your own door asking if you are a criminal for being in your own home. Given those factors I could certainly forgive Dr. Gates for being "testy" with the officer (if indeed he was) and the cop, assuming he saw the suitcases as reported and asked about his trip, should have been more sympathetic in my opinion.

Exactly. The main issue that I had when this thread started was the fact that some people (on this forum and elsewhere) were treating the police report as if it were some neutral, third party assessment of what really happened and using it to critique Gates' behavior. My point was that police reports should always be taken with a grain of salt as the recent statements of Lucia Whalen clearly demonstrate.

You know things are really screwed up when Fox News is forced to come out the right side of things especially in a case with racial overtones.

I am now definitely of the opinion that Obama acted too hastily in dealing with this incident. I don't think there was any issue with him stating the the Cambridge PD acted inappropriately. IMO he shouldn't have caved so quickly when the RW screamers started attacking and waited for the facts to come before he invited Crowley to the WH for beers. Not only did this idiot arrest Dr. Gates without justification, but he also slandered him and Lucia Whalen, the women who phoned in the complaint, with his bogus incident report.

    lol...

obama chooses to express some characteristics of civility, that he learned from his days in harvard, by bringing two feuding parties together, over a nice, cold, miller genuine draft...

    nice

    :smt111

too bad he didn't express the same attributes, when he had his chance to address the situation earlier
