What's the purpose of either this article or book? Both are published to diminish a man who is no longer with us and can not defend himself. Good job, America. These pathetic souls who have got absolutely no talent for the games they cover almost always ride the fame and coattails of the true stars they cover. If Payton's cheating and drug abuse were so horrendous, shouldn't his wife and children be the ones to enlighten us on how heavy the burden was for them? Sad commentary for the lives we lead today and what passes now as information. I am sure that I am diminished to have read this article because I can not get back the time I spent reading the nonsense.

Despite whatever personal problems may have plagued him, Walter Payton was far more of a stand up guy than anyone who would try to profit off the exploitation of another man's vulnerabilities, particularly when the exploitation occurs years after the death of the person about whom the allegations are being made. Guess there's no money in publishing another book about the good stuff he did. Very sad.

Walter Payton was a beautiful yet, violent runner unlike most running backs he dished out punishment as much as he took it, there is no way his body could have absorbed the punishment without painkillers. I have friends who are dentist, teachers and housewives who became addicted to painkillers and had to seek treatment. Half the Christians I know have had affairs, that does not make it right, but it is not extraordinary in the least. This book is self righteous nonsense. No one said Walter Payton was Jesus Christ. This man died in 1999 may his soul rest in peace. God only can judge him and only God will judge us!

In a statement issued Wednesday and signed by “Connie Payton and family,” Walter Payton’s relatives said the book included fact and fiction.

“Walter, like all of us, wasn’t perfect,” the statement reads. “The challenges he faced were well known to those of us who loved and lived with him. He was a great father to Jarrett and Brittney and held a special place in the football world and the Chicago community. Recent disclosures — some true, some untrue — do not change this. I’m saddened that anyone would attempt to profit from these stories, many told by people with little credibility.”

This book does nothing for us as a society and has clearly hurt his wife and children.
