I don't know if it's genuine or not. Only he knows that. I know I did and said insensitive things when I was younger. Why? Ignorance. Peer pressure. The desire to fit in. I cringe now when I think back on some of that behavior. Things like this tend to create come-to-Jesus moments and make you realize how wrong and thoughtless you really are.

I hope you are this philosophical if someone sings about raping underage girls:cool:

    Exactly
It's not that they just sung about the N word but also lynching. Replace lynching with raping and the "they were young and acting stupid" would be null but I guess since lynching only applies to blacks it can be forgiven

Considering msnbc is usually left leaning and sympathetic.....I am

I shouldn't be tho as this story isn't on their front page..unlike everywhere else I look

I guess they got the story, blamed rap music, and called it a day

Bottom line is, not one of us knows what's in that kid's heart or what prompted his apology. I'm just allowing for the possibility that it could be genuine. Feel free to think what you wish.

Even if that's the case this guy was trying to fit in with bigots. What type of person does that?

I'm just going to say that is always easy to say lets give them a chance when your ass isn't on the line. I notice that from quite a few woman on here as well as men.

What you state is pretty spot on Ore, the elements for criminal 'hate speech" are as below for most states...

"Hate speech is a communication that carries no meaning other than the expression of hatred for some group, especially in circumstances in which the communication is likely to provoke violence. It is an incitement to hatred primarily against a group of persons defined in terms of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and the like. Hate speech can be any form of expression regarded as offensive to racial, ethnic and religious groups and other discrete minorities or to women."

It would be tough to argue that the video rises to meet this definition as I assume there were no minorities around to hear the song at the time.

For me personally, the disgusting, vile racial slur is one thing, but how devoid of just basic humanity these kids must be to reference one of the most hideous atrocities past and present (lynching), in a joking manner. Seriously sick individuals.....

    Agreed.

I went to a private Catholic school for a couple of years in High School and you better bet that all those songs are very old songs and chants. Maybe they get updated and changed, but it's all the same. They certainly didn't start with rap. The special treatment that goes on is incredible.

Remorse? yah right. I have to agree - only because they were caught. It doesn't stop, it just becomes more hidden.

Oh and I wouldn't be surprised in the least if they didn't have some songs and/or chants about nailing drunk chicks (rape) etc.

And as far as the white privilege thing - you better bet it exists and most of the idiots who get the most benefit from it have NOOOOO freaking clue.

    I'm telling you
Minority related atrocities seem to be the only incidents we should forgive and forget but anything involving "true Americans" we should never forget.
I will say this in Ches's defense she reminds me of my mom and sister. Hardcore Christians who truly believe in forgiveness above all things so it might be coming from that place.
However its unfortunate that it resembles the narrative we are constantly force fed when it comes to racist acts. Just move on it was in the past. What about their free speech to say Ni**er. What about rap lyrics they say it there all the time. They work overtime to divorce context from reality and most importantly trying to get everyone to pretend this shit never happened we all must be crazy.
