It appears they didn't vote to allow them to be executed, rather they removed sexual orientation as criteria for protection from arbitrary execution. So rather than saying they approve of executions for reasons related to sexual orientation, instead they aren't explicitly protecting those individuals. I don't agree with that, but there is a difference between approving of something and simply choosing not to address it. They took out the language that would have prevented passing of the resolution, so essentially they sacrificed the human rights of the homosexuals in the interest of protecting the human rights of everyone else afforded protection in the resolution. Pretty typical political strategy, sacrifice one group to benefit several groups, then try again in the future when the political climate is more conducive to adding sexual orientation back in. It's sometimes easier to expand the scope of something already in force, than it is to pass it as it's proposed if there is great opposition... the get your foot in the door approach.

I think the decision sucks, but I also think using a misleading headline is inappropriate. They could have simply stated it more clearly, rather than wording it for the purpose of inflaming people.

The Un had a resolution which has a list of people/groups which are protected from arbitrary execution. Gay people are no longer protected under this resolution, so they basically can be killed if convicted by a judge for no other reason than being gay. The law in some of these places(think Middle East, Caribbean, Africa) doesnt protect them from unlawful execution.

Yea, I usually hate making threads involving politics and stuff because I hate the wording of alot of the articles I read. They can be very misleading.

It wouldn't be politics if it wasn't misleading, inflammatory, or just plain wrong at times. What's unfortunate is some people will read the headline only and get all pissed off about something that isn't actually accurate. But then that is the point after all.

That is the nature of the beast.

It it true? The reason is I know every gay group in the world will b*tch to the rooftops. For example the execution law in Kenya suspended and boycotts of some Caribbean islands and Zimbauwe.
