But look at what catwoman has to wear! LOL Honestly, what woman in her right mind wouldn't ditch the burgers and fries and live on air, in order to fit into THAT kind of outfit! And Christian Bale's obsession with putting on (and taking off) weight for his roles should be taken with a grain of salt. It's all about fantasy and it's hit and miss. It's also a very subjective thing, from the audiences point of view because some will excuse it (or not notice it), the weight, and others will make a deal out of it. In the end you've just got to try to get lost in the fantasy, and accept that, in movie land, a 100 pound girl can beat to death a 200 pound man. :smt043 Anne Hathaway as Catwoman in the new Batman.
It's certainly no less believable than watching Jet Li, Jackie Chan or Wesley Snipes, none of whom are big guys, take on guys twice or more their size. Jet Li laughs during interviews and admits that in real life he wouldn't stand a chance with his movie opponents. Then, there's the story about Wesley Snipes becoming hyped up during the filming of one of his films. During a break in between scenes he decided to challenge on the extras and was summarily beaten. The moral of the story is that it's a movie, and the suspension of belief is what they try to achieve.
lol!!!! I remember reading about snipes. It said he tried a move meant to take down a bigger opponent and, the guy just grabbed him and beat the crap out of him.
TuPac and Biggie couldn't separate entertainment from reality either. Rapping about being a street gangster is a lot different than actually being one. Especially when you go up against a REAL street gangster.
I don't know where you are from but guys get into bar fights all the time, everywhere. This is another difference between men and women. Most men are aware that there could come a time when he has to stand up and defend himself or his family. This is why you have many martial arts schools, boxing classes, shooting ranges, etc. Men are very aware of the violent nature of some men and many try to prepare themselves for that situation if it happens.
Interesting article. Thats why i can respect an actress like Jessica Biel. She may not be the best actress in he world but she takes her action roles seriously and tries to look the part of a chick who can kick your ass. Look at how buff she got for Blade:Trinity and Stealth. Michelle Rodriguez deserves some credit too. Back in my day we had Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hamilton and both those women looked like they stomp a hole in you. I dunno what happened to Hollywood.
Uo oh! Now you have done it! I did a modified test when I applied for the police. I passed it with flying colours. When we graduated and I had higher standing than ALL the men from my department the first comment out of their mouths was "Ya but you did the girls test" Never mind that I kicked their asses in DT, Firearms and theory. To solve that problem I said OK Lets do the same test, same time lines. I still beat them. I ran faster, did more push ups, did more sit up and could push/pull the dummy harder and faster and lock the hand cuff machine faster! Also I patrolled the downtown core with "gasp" another female officer. Both of us are 5'7 1/2. We took bar fights, street fights, weapons calls, and we were a great team. To suggest I was only good enough to difuse domestics and deal with female offenders is ridiculous! I often had to put my ass in harms way because some male officer was going macho and flexing his muscles and was about to get his ass kicked by a bar full of rednecks. I would step in and calm the situation down and get the folks who needed to be cuffed cuffed without cracking heads. And TRUST ME....when I needed to get into a dust up I was ready to get down and dirty. There was not a man on my force that would not work with me. I was well respected by my snior officers as well as a full officer not a fucking meter maid/desk jockey! AND I earned my fitness pin every year I was there. I was in the gym every day. Most of the men were 20 to 30 pounds overweight. I had to prove myself every day and I did!
Exception not the rule buddy.. I don't know what slow ass men you had in your class though. You beat everyone? Wow you must be a specimen my friend. I don't doubt you can out shoot people or even beat a man in fight but generally speaking and that's how I stated everything women aren't usually faster or stronger. Look back to what army ranger said because its worth pointing out.
Andrae, maybe YOU need to know the difference between hand-to-hand combat and martial arts before you jump down other people's throats. People use those terms way too loosely and not look at the bigger picture. Martial Arts is more of a sport, for entertainment. It's not something you can apply in life or death situations. You're more likely to get your ass kicked that way. That's why, whether in law enforcement or military, Close-Quarters Combat is taught as opposed to karate or other forms of martial arts. It's about getting the upper hand on the other person quickly regardless of your position. You can't do that with other forms.
I can tell you this, if they ever allow women in infantry my sister would be the first one to sign up, but she's a BRICK HOUSE. She's run marathons, been on the Baton death march twice, but she is not a lil bity woman. And no matter what we say when we see a woman on TV/Movies we want to see an attractive thin woman. We can blame Hollywood all we want but Hollywood is going to sell us what we buy. You wouldn't believe a *cough* THICK chick could fight, jump over cars...run up stairs (etc)...and most THICK chicks cant. There are very strong women who could pull of these roles, but we don't want to see them. So....really what do we do. We wait, look at that sexy sexy chick who's 120 soaking wet, kick ass. That is all.
Pankratia(sorry for the spelling greek martial art the spartans used), Kali, jui jitsu are all combat arts taught in militaries. It often depends on the school but in my experience especially before the mma phenomena martial arts was used for hand to hand combat. In fact it wasn't popularized in the US as a sport until the early 90s and even then it was mostly in states like California, Florida, and Texas. Most schools taught you street survival.
Certainly Kali's origins could be traced back during more tribal warfare in the Philippines. That's how Magellan died in the hands of Lapu-Lapu. But it's more of an art more so. And you can't say "in my experience" unless you've actually partake in those disciplines. But that's besides the point. The fact is that while there are some combat practices which can be used for actual practical measures to protect oneself, the majority of them are simply for entertainment and cannot be applied in live or death situations. Kali is weapon based, so you won't have time to equip a weapon. The best you can do is learn to rely on wit and overpowering other people. In other words, hand-to-hand combat is more about a combination of physics, kinesiology, and the overall understanding of the human body when considered in defense fighting.
Eh? That I disagree with. You have way too many ordeals that come into play, like say a woman who has self defense class, or knows martial arts, and a man who doesn't. It really depends upon a lot of things, the only way it's certain 98% of the time is if we are talking about a standard man and woman who where a woman tries to out muscle a man. Than yes, due to men usually being stronger, they will win. But most action movies aren't like that, these women are actually trained how to fight, and no matter how big you are, one punch in the right area will lay you out. No amount of muscle is going to save you from a punch in the temple that equals immediate ko. The reason why domestic violence favors women over men is simple, 1) Men are typically much more aggressive. After all, when can you think of women starting wars? So a man is much more likely to beat up on a woman than vice versa. And a woman who is in love with the man is much less likely to actually to respond in fighting. I mean think about it, how many times do you hear a woman kicking her boyfriend in the balls because she got mad at him, not many times. 2) Men are expected to take more. A clear example of this is the double standard of slapping. If a woman slaps a man, it's just considered an ego bruiser. If a man slaps a woman, that's a one way ticket to the slammer. Nobody should be slapping anybody IMO, and both should be given the same response of Domestic violence, but since men are suppose to "man up" and take it, that's one less avenue to consider.
dude are you for real? have you ever taken a martial art before? If you have studied under half-decent instructors, you would be learning self-defense techniques that you wouldn't use for sport, along with techniques that you would. I've studied taekwon-do, BJJ, and some judo, and always had instructors that would mix in real-world applications involving pressure points and moves that would definitely be illegal in the 'octagon,' so to speak. seriously i'm lol'ing right now
oh and yes, small women can do damage to a big man i'm thinking of a certain purple belt that frequently makes all the boys tap
You should NEVER rely on that theory that one punch in the right area will knock a man out. I don't know if you played any contact sports but there are many guys whose tolerance to take punishment is a lot higher than most. In boxing, for example, there are guys who have what is called a "weak chin" or a "glass jaw". You hit them in a certain spot, they will go down. But you also have guys like MIKE TYSON, no matter where you hit him, he keeps coming. You soon realize he is your worst NIGHTMARE come true. All rules you thought applied to everyone is out the window. The only way to beat them is to out think them. GEORGE FOREMAN was the same way. Muhammed Ali wrote in his autobiography that he was the real life BOOGIE MAN. In their fight in 1974, The Thriller in Manilla, he wrote how he threw everything he could at George in the early rounds but he kept coming at him, HARD. He hit him everywhere, it didn't matter. So Ali started covering up and leaning back on the ropes, hoping George would wear himself out. He would make comments to George to get him mad so he would swing on him, "You hit like my mother" or "that didn't hurt punk, you can do better than that". This went on for 8 rounds, people even started booing Ali because it seemed like he was scared to fight George. Finally, in round 8, George had tried himself out from swinging on Ali. Ali hit him once and he went down for the count. Marvalous Marvin Hagler, Aaron Pryor, etc. a female will not beat those guys, only another man could. You are not going to beat those kind of men with a lucky punch. There are many men out there who are like that, can take whatever you throw at them and keep coming. Your absolute WORST NIGHTMARE standing in front of you.
That, and my father used to study Karate and Judo and he taught me, that if you hit any of the pressure points to weaken someone, especially if someone was attacking me, like the chin bone, the ankle, the knee, the sternum and neck, I could weaken his position.
