Tiki Barber, former star running back for the New York Giants, has filed paperwork with the league indicating that he's ending his retirement to once again be an NFL running back. The Giants acknowledged on Tuesday that the 35-year-old Barber has asked to be taken off the reserve-retirement list and that they will release him once the league allows it as teams cannot make roster moves during the current extension of the CBA talks. "We wish Tiki nothing but the best, and when we are able to make the transaction, we will release him from our reserve-retired list," the Giants said. I did not see this coming. The first question that comes to my mind is "why?" Why on earth would a 35-year-old running back be so eager to return to a physically punishing league that, quite frankly, treats 35-year-old running backs like garbage? Especially when that league isn't even certain to have a 2011 season? Jon Wertheim of SI.com passes this along: Barber's personal and professional life have been in shambles recently. In April 2010, Barber reportedly left his wife of 11 years, Ginny, for 23-year-old Traci Johnson, a former NBC intern. Ginny was eight months pregnant at the time. Soon after, NBC cited its morals clause and terminated Barber's contract, which reportedly paid him more than $300,000 per year. In June 2010, the New York Post reported Barber was broke and couldn't pay his divorce settlement with his ex-wife.
LOL, a lot of women tore into that brotha for what he did, leaving his 8 months pregnant wife for the intern. Clearly he is running back for the cash. Pun intended. My question is who wants a 36 year old running back in the NFL, is he nuts, that is like Brett Favre age for a RB in the league. He seems to be hoping someone gives him a contract for riding pine, thing is the NFL is cut throat. If you aren't cutting it, you get dropped like a ton of rocks.
why? he needs the money and no one will hire him...what really begs an answer is how some celebrities and athletes rise above media sensations concerning their personal lives/choices...and others sink further... if he hasn't been working then perhaps he turned back to physical conditioning so that he can return to the NFL...
Very true. Hard to believe he is broke always thought he had a smart head on him. Then yet again these celebs live a completely different lifestyle.
Yeah, you're right. Michael Stranhan definitely made a huge comeback from his nasty situation and divorce. Kobe has bounced back and so has Charles Barkley. However, Tiki's situation is different because he has to get back into physical shape after having been gone so long. At 36 that is going to be very interesting. Endorsements do not require lifting weights.
Dumbass divorced his wife at 8 months of pregnancy with twins! In addition to the two children they had prior, that's a divorce settlement, alimony, and child support for four kids. Yes a lump divorce settlement and alimony are two different things, ask any woman. And what's the running cost for keeping a 23 year old blonde on your arm nowadays?
I bore no ill will for Tiki before he "retired" from the NFL (though the fact that he was working for Faux Noise didn't endear me to him any). The man was an elite RB in a league where men his age don't usually play at such a high level when they hit 30, but he was a noteable exception. Then he started whining about how he'd rather go into broadcasting (which he dabbled with in his off-seasons) even though he wasn't that great a TV personality. He stood to make an enormous payday by remaining with NY, and whats more, the team was already well on its way to making a Super Bowl run even before he retired. When he decided to quit, I just couldn't comprehend it, and I KNEW he was making a mistake that would come back to haunt him... AND I WAS RIGHT!!! The very next year the Giants won a SB without Tiki!!! If Barber stayed on the team, not only would he have a SB ring right now, but there's a great chance a high profile player like him would have been not only the SB MVP but possibliy the league MVP as well. This would have led to more endorsements, a bigger payday, and even help secure his place in Canton. But thanks to his shortsighted stupidity, HE GETS NONE OF IT! NOW he has to deal with the fact that he's a loser in his personal life as well as his professional life, and if he somehow makes it back onto the field (which is highly unlikely), he will get paid very little and sustain punishment on his 35 year old body. At a time when he should be retiring from the NFL, he's returning.
Yeah it is very expensive to have a 23 yo hot blonde on your arm, I am sure my Syrian buddy can attest to it, lol
Hmmm...I thought Tiki's wife filed for divorce. I didn't know it was the other way around. Anyway, the running cost for a blonde is any amount the brotha is willing to risk in getting one...whether it be 10 hundred or 100 million and many have risked the latter.:smt045
