Interesting, but completely unsurprising to me.

    I ask these questions.

Who controls the major television/radio networks?

Who puts these hate talk radio people in their places of power and allows them to go as far as they do with saying the things they say?

Who ultimately gains from the rise in hate, in the division in race and class?

As a diversion tactic it is almost flawless, keeps the "dumb" people's eye off of who their real enemy is.

And it isn't immigrants, or brownskinned people, or the governement.

Those with abosolute money/power/control would/will do anything to keep it.

Lobbyists control washington politicians in a very fundamental way, through money, the people behind those lobbyists/corporations control shyte.

They elect presidents. They got Bush elected, twice. He didn't needed to be liked he just needed to pass some really fucked up policy like the Patriot Act, trash a national landmark -or let it happen- to start a billions generating war for the private sector, and bring the country to its knees so they could implement phase two.

Financial meltdown and sweeping policy changes that curbs even more basic freedoms, bring in the new guy, but first dangle the females population's greatest hope, a woman in front of our eyes, not one but 2!

Ultimately put in a young, hip, good looking guy that everything about him screams change and different. However, he's sure to whip up the racists to a frothing, mess of hate and even pull in the people who say "but I have a black friend" so that when they are ready for the next thing (and I have no idea who it will be other than I highly doubt it will be Palin), the public will vote their way.
