With all the controversy going on around us about the use of the "N" word being used as a term of endearment. I would like to report that as far as my lady is concern she hates the word and takes issue with those who use it. For a black man to have his woman who happens to be white call him the "N" word as a term of endearment, it smacks one in the face as a total insult to that unique relationship which is scorned by all.

    Question:

How is such a word that was used as a means to degrade ones self-esteem ever become a term of endearment by the very people it was targeted? When did this happen?

it's not a case for all the women though. I would NEVER call any of my friends a bitch or whatever! it's definitely out of tradition here....

Yeah me personally I don't see how such a word like that isn't banned, personally I do not see any use of that word, and I don't see why people defend it in such a way that it has been by the black community, its just unprofessional really, if they banned the word or fined everyone who uses the word I wouldn't care at all. But thats just a little bit to extreme for one word is it? :S

I have never ever herd of a certain word belonging to a certain race and only to that race ever... have any of you? little bit one sided..maybe just me. if a black person using it its cool but if another person of another race uses it in the same meaning its wrong..

Besides the Japanese word of Gaijin is much better and get the point across nicer :D

I don't think the problem is the words themselves, but the actions which they convey. Think about it you could a woman "Sugarplum"...and if the meaning has the connotations of the "B" word then it is meaningless. The characteristics of what it means are what in my view needs to change first and foremost, then you can get into removing the actual word all together. But if the former is not done before the latter, then you are simply wasting time.

I would and wil NEVER use the N word to describe my man, even in the throas of passion. It is disrespectful and degrading to him.

In class, I tell my students they can't use the word either. We go over code switching from home talk to world talk and I explain in the general public that word is NOT acceptable. Now these are inner city kids that I teach, mostly Latino, and it irritates me to hear both them and white kids cal each other the N word. I don't have a problem with black kids doing it, but do tell my African American students not to do it in front of white or Latino kids, as they will think it is okay to refer to black people that way.I know I get pissed if a non-Irish person calls me a mick, but could care less if an Irish person does. The kids get it and respect my wishes, as I am cool with other things(like if a kid messes up and says, fuck in a low voice, I give them a warning instead of kicking them out of class, however, if they tell another person to fuck off in anger then they get to take a walk).

In terms of woman caling each other bitches and hos, etc. not my friends and I. I would not be friends with someone who did not respect me...

Great common sense in dealing with such a sensitive subject...and dealing with kids no-less.

Thanks jelly..that means a lot coming from you.Of course it does not hurt that my students did see my man pick me up from work on a couple of ocasions and saw first hand that I am open minded and practice what I preach.

the same concept of self-independence which governs your will to not use those words, is the same blueprint which governs other people's will to use them.

you may never understand why others use them, the same way they'll never understand why you would refuse to do so...

i've always been a "black or white," right or wrong kind of person, but now... I find myself living in shades of gray

usually both sides of a given issue have credible reasons for their actions, and I find it difficult to just align myself with one or the other.
