any comments about the inter-racial marriage and/or the scene at the bar in the movie "This Christmas"?
I was mislead by the title of this thread when I first read it. I didn't know what you were talking about until I realized you were referring to the MOVIE, 'This Christmas'.
Sorry about that - I changed it now. Given that it was in the "Movies - Music - Television" area...I thought it was clear.
I just saw the movie yesterday and it was very good. What I do dislike about Black movies sometimes is that they stereotype BM and BW who date outside of their race. They are no different from mainstream films either. I would like for a film to show an IR in a positive manner for a change without the stereotypes and generalizations. :?
I have not seen this movie until you mentioned of the IR scene. Anyway it would be a while even in this 21st Century to have positive IR acting.
I saw the movie last Saturday and it is like Heartdesire said,stereotyping-her parents don't like the relationship, homeboy is scared of being found out and getting in trouble. Also, there was not much displays of affection between them-he didn't even go to the hotel to see her. Also, WW plays as almost helpless.
lol the only big screen, unstereotyped relationship that I seen was in the movie "O (loosely based on Othello)," with my man Mekhi Pfifer. Even though he was like the only black guy at his school, he was accepted because he was their star B-Ball player ( that may be a stereotype..not all brothas can run ball lol). His white coach took him in like a son, and he had a white girlfriend. The only mention of race was in the very end..but I do not want to spoil the movie too much.... I tell you what tho..I just watched Jungle Fever (no, it's not a porno) for the first time in years, and that movie threw me for a loop when the white girl's father literally beat her up after he found out she was dating a black guy..
I read a book about Italians in Hollywood and found out Joe Pesci almost got the role as the father in Jungle Fever,he even told Anabella Sciorra about it.
the father was NO joke.... I never seen a man punch a woman like that...keep in mind that was his grown daughter...
Wesley Snipes and the classy Natasha Kinski.... that movie did a good job at portraying IR love within the urban professional society..... can't remember any other movies that were like that... His asian girlfriend was nice also... interesting enough..i seen that movie by pure accidental luck.... I went to a hollywood video store in my "hood," and went to rent another movie...I think it may have been Kurt Russel's "Soldier." I didn't check the contents of the containers back then...being the naive guy who trusted the video store workers' ability to put the right movies into the right cases... but...alas...i got home, opened the box..and seen a movie called "one night stand" and said, WTF!.. it sounded like a cheap smut flick...then I found out it had my boy Wesley in it, and some cute asian chick...and Natasha Kinski..and Robert Downey Jr ( I think he was in it, haven't checked the film credits on IMDB.com) it was a very interesting movie..and i seen it at a young age, when I was still curious about IR couples...this movie was far from a cheap smut flick..
The Asian girlfriend was actually his wife in the movie and they had two cute kids. If I can recall the Asian wife made really loud noises and exclamations during sex. She was played by the actress Ming Na Wen (sp?) who may best known for her work in "Joy Luck Club"and the TV series "ER" (interestingly enough she had a black lover on ER played by Morris Chestnut and had a baby by him which she gave up for adoption; she also had a relationship with Mekhi Phiffer's character on the show too). Kinski played the woman Snipes' character had an affair with and yes they did have a love scene. It was an okay movie and I ahven't seen it in awhile so I forgot how it all turned out. Here's another interracial film that came out about the same time : "The Price of Kissing." The actor Leon is the lead male and in the film he ends up as part of love triangle with two white women. Its a cute movie, though not very memorable except for the interracial aspect of it.
I got to see that flick. On One Night Stand,it was one of those few movies I see over and over again.
told u... first time i seen it was by pure accident..... it was a good view tho....... wesley snipes, keepin' it real
Also, check out Valentine's Day starring Mario Van Peebles and Zehra Leverman. They hit it off. That is one of my faves.
Just saw This Christmas today and well... The movie was ok. The casting was somehwat well done. I would've never guessed they would pick a girl like the one they did for Columbus Short's character. As a matter of fact, she is beautiful. But yea, anyways, the IR relationship they portrayed in the movie was sort of stereotypical. I would have like to see less conflict between the two and none of that jailtime that separated them for like 1/2 the movie. Other than that, the movie was decent. The writing was done well but was slightly flawed. Oh well, glad to see some movies are recognizing IR relationships.
