    Suprchic,

A buddy of mine treated me to see "The Happening". I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Have you or do you plan to see this film?

    i'm not suprchic...

    but i will say this..

i have no idea what the movie is about, but I want to see it anyway...

the title and the ads on the bus, don't really give much info on it...plus they dont say who stars in it...

My boy Marky Mark is in it (right), so I think i'll see it because of him

he usually does a good job with his roles

Yeah, Mark Walberg is the lead actor. If there's one critism I have of the movie, it's the acting. I'll add that M. Night isn't the greatest at writing dialog either.

You're right. The trailers don't give much and that's good. I'll say if you like his other movies, you'll most likely this one as well.

If I'm not Suprchic, can I not answer this question??

I saw it yesterday. Yes, Newpowermoves, the acting was bad for most of the film, and the dialog, ugh, horrible.

But, overall, I'd give it 2 stars. It was a neat concept, and the message was good. I've seen much better acting by Marky Mark and John Leguizamo, but I'm sure the dialog they had to say didn't help them....

It wasn't bad though! Not great, but not bad. :D

    you know....

writing/directing can make or break an actor..

from what i've seen, Marky Mark has potential. He was a lovable asshole in "The Departed," did a good job at being the lead in "Shooter," and was another lovable guy, with tremendous heart who didn't give up in "Invincible."

If he sucked in The happening, it's because that M. Night guy pulled a Guy Richie and lost all of his directing skill..

2 stars out of what, Bookworm? And kindly explain your star giving criteria.

I agree wholeheartedly with your statement about writing/directing.

But I think the leader of the Funky Bunch has reached his full potential. I doubt that his acting gets any better than what we saw in "The Departed". I thought the "walk of fame" cast and the expert directing by Martin Scorcese helped him to play above himself and I'm saying this as a person who enjoys his acting. You mentioned "Shooter" which is ironic in that I view that movie as a grade below any of the "Bourne" movies. I think Mark Walberg has similar characteristics as Matt Damon but is a step below as well.

I think M. Night has great ideas. I like the deliberate pacing of his movies and I like how he can make the simpliest things seem scary. There's a shot of trees in this movie that, depending on your perspective, was quite menacing. But sometimes, the guy needs serious help in the dialog department. Maybe Quenton Tarantino would be willing to lend a hand

Considering the popularity and notoriety of Matt Damon, being a step below him is not bad at all...

if you said he was a step below Charles Barkley as an actor (seriously, have you seen this guy act), I would be worried.

As for The Departed, that movie had one of the most ambitious casting calls since "Heat." Even tho most, if not all, of the A-grade stars were white, it was still something to behold. I used to be a big fan of Alec Baldwin and Nickelson. Then you add in Damon, Mark, and DiCaprio and god knows who else...

    off the hook..

if they had a few more big-time brothas in there besides Anthony Anderson () , maybe it woulda won a few more oscars...

but if they did have more bros in there, they would of course, be used to round out the casting of "local drug dealers." Of course, those guys woulda got oscars, for such "accurate portrayals of proponents for urban decay."

    2 stars out of 4.

I don't really have any "criteria". It's based on many factors. I'm not a professional movie critic, so the stars I give a movie are more along the lines of my personal enjoyment level.

The movie started out as a 1 star movie, but it picked up towards the middle of the movie, and the acting started to get better. Even the dialog seemed to improve.

I usually don't knock movies if they have really bad unrealistic action or even bad special effects, if other things take over and make up for what the movie is lacking.

I did like the methodical approach to the storytelling and the answer to what was happening and why. I was worried that it would be similar to Stephen King's book "Cell", that had this really cool concept, but absolutely no resolution. We never found out who or why. I read that book and thought, what a waste of time.

Actually now that I compared the movie to that book, I'll even raise the movie to 2 1/2 stars, merely for giving the viewer a resolution. :D

If you noticed, I said "a buddy of mine TREATED ME...", so I understand your situation.

I really don't appreciate you mentioning the name of that other movie  But yeah. This makes up for the movie "who's name we do not speak of".

    Damn Petty,

We was cool before you mentioned the name of "the movie whose name we do not speak of". Does no one hear my cry?

But yeah, that movie was terrible. Terrible, I say!!! I thought I actually threw that one away before a buddy reminded me that I shoved it his way. I made the mistake of buying it sight unseen. I'm a fan of bad movies. Many of them have a certain charm that pulls me. But that dvd was close to getting executed by fire squad :smt067

    lol...

i rarely buy dvds just for that simple fact...that many of them, don't deserve my hard earned $$$

    that should be illegal, seriously...

20 dollars can buy you food, that you need to survive...

    or..

20 dollar can buy you THE WORST movie ever created

    lol

i dont know about you, but I would rather starve while watching a good a movie, than starve watching a bad one.

$20? Are you crazy? I haven't paid $20 for a dvd in 5 years  Repeat after me...SALES. On average, I pay no more than $7 which is lower than non-matinee theater prices. Most times, I wait for a sale like Best Buy usually have in late summer where they sell dvds for $3 or $4. $20 or more is the price for most movies recently released on dvd but I wait. I'm extremely patient. I don't need to see any of them as soon as they're released.
